Oil Spill Scenario Overview On 11 August 2006, the oil tanker Solar sunk off Oil Spill Scenario Overview On 11 August 2006, the oil tanker Solar sunk off the coast of Guimaras Island in the Philippines. By 24 August 2006, some 50, 000 gallons of oil had leaked into the sea, polluting more than 300 km of coastline and threatening fishing as well as other islands of the Philippines. A state of emergency was declared in the Philippines on 25 August 2006, and activated the International Charter: Space and Major Disaster. The following describes how Geoportal could have been used in this situation. 51
