Genesis 15: 1 1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.
God’s Promise Genesis 15
God’s Meets Abram in a Vision and Makes a Promise God started a conversation with Abram in a vision and said: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward. Notice the interaction between Abram and God
Abram’s Complaint But Abram said, “O Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezar of Damascus? And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir. ”
God’s Response God says that Abram’s own son will be his heir Abram’s offspring will number like the stars in the sky
Believe It or Not How do you respond to such an outrageous promise? Abram believed God counted Abram’s belief as righteousness
Sometimes Belief is Not Enough God promised Abram possession of the land where God had led him Abram asks “How will I know for sure? ”
Genesis 15: 9 -11 So the LORD said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon. Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away
God Cuts a Covenant with Abram Three year old heifer Three year old goat Three year old ram Dove Pigeon
Genesis 15: 12 -16 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a deep and dreadful darkness came over him. Then the LORD said to him, “Know for certain that your descendents will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age. In the fourth generation your descendents will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.
Genesis 15: 17 When the sun had set, and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
Hebrews 6: 13 -14 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendents. ”
Romans 3: 21 -23 But now a righteousness apart from law has been made known, to which the law and the prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
Romans 4: 1 -5 What shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this matter? If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about – but not before God. What does scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. ” Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness.
Romans 4: 16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring – not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.
Romans 4: 23 -25 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness – for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was delivered over to death for our sins and raised to life for our justification.
I John 3: 1 -2 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
I John 5: 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
John 14: 1 -3 Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
God’s Amazing Promise He has promised eternal life He has promised that His Spirit will dwell in our hearts as a guarantee of a life forever with Him He has promised that we will grow in His Spirit He has promised that we will be like Him in form and in goodness when we see Him He is preparing a place just for us
The Bottom Line God will keep His promise to you. He has staked His very existence on it. He can not lie. He will not change His mind. Do You Believe it?
