LHC potential performance range Goal: 1 fb-1 Energy: 3. 5 Te. V to 4 LHC potential performance range Goal: 1 fb-1 Energy: 3. 5 Te. V to 4 Te. V To be discussed at the Chamonix workshop in Jan. 2011. Bunch intensity Baseline 1. 2 x 1011 protons, higher possible from injectors. Number of bunches 450 to 930 bunches (75 ns spacing): potential factor 2. Colliding beam sizes Maintain excellent beams from injectors: 50% smaller than nominal Possible to “squeeze” beams further: another 50% gain! Peak luminosities in the range of 6 to 16 x 1032 cm-2 s-1 could be possible. At least 3 times more than what we have seen in 2010! Integrated luminosity between 1 and 3 fb-1 would appear feasible. S. Redaelli, LHC jamboree, 17 -12 -2010 16

Attacks against CERN computers in 2010 have had negative impact on our reputation and on the operation of experiments. It is the responsibility of all of us to protect CERN computing: ► laptops, computers, … ► passwords, web pages, data files, software, … ► computing services, control & DAQ systems, GRID nodes, … Also: respect copyrights of music, videos, etc. Don’t share !!! Opening the door… 2010 Council opened the door to greater integration in particle physics Opening the door… 2010 Council opened the door to greater integration in particle physics when it unanimously adopted the recommendations to examine the role of CERN in the light of increasing globalization in particle physics. The key points agreed by Council include: – All states shall be eligible for Membership, irrespective of their geographical location; – A new Associate Membership status has been introduced to allow non. Member States to establish or intensify their institutional links with CERN; – Participation of CERN in global projects wherever sited. Romania is Candidate for Accession to Membership since 2010. Negotiations with Cyprus, Israel, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey applying for Membership are starting. Brazil is applying for Associate Membership.

Budget 2011 and beyond CERN is attractive CERN is in the spotlight …. but Budget 2011 and beyond CERN is attractive CERN is in the spotlight …. but this doesn’t guarantee a budget economical and financial situation in member states difficult, nonetheless Budget 2011 incl. personnel CVI (0. 33%) approved by Council after many bi- and multi-lateral discussions despite the difficult situation in the Member States showing confidence in CERN However continued concern for the next years

Budget 2012 and beyond Need to be even more proactive in promoting CERN’s achievements/possibilities Budget 2012 and beyond Need to be even more proactive in promoting CERN’s achievements/possibilities in all areas (research, technology, education, training, . . . ) Use the fact that CERN is attractive and in the spotlight as an opportunity to promote basic science per se basic science as a driver for innovation Increasing importance of KTT Industry Advisor appointed CERN is invited to participate in two sessions of this year’s meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos recognition of the value of basic science to society ? We will see……but also act

Science and Arts Although we are enjoying unprecedented levels of popular and political support Science and Arts Although we are enjoying unprecedented levels of popular and political support around the world, the trend is still against basic science. This means for us first of all to deliver on our scientific promises. But we also have to show our relevance to society on other levels, and engagement with culture plays an important part. The growing attention and interest from artists, architects, writers, etc allows us to engage with culture in a broader sense. We are engaged in a number of “arts” projects, to be realised only if external funding can be found
