FET Proactive Initiatives Quantum Information Processing Emerging Nanoelectronics Global Computing Bio-inspired Intelligent Information Systems (New) IP IP, No. E for FET proactive initiatives proposers are encouraged to submit pre proposals deadline 1 July, feed back in 2 weeks
Quantum Information Processing • objective: basic research aimed at realising a fully functional multi-qubit system – few qubit applications – simulation of quantum systems – integrate theory/experiments/algorithms – long-term rationale: build the general purpose quantum computer
Emerging Nanoelectronics • objective: nanoelectronics beyond 10 nm, non-CMOS – hybrid CMOS-molecular, – nanowires - nanotubes – single-molecule electronics • rationale: – non-CMOS electronics for integration into CMOS and later for independent technology – new functions, low cost, manufacturing, self-organisation • constituencies: electronics, physics, chemistry, (biology)
Preparing for FP 7: directions • Types of research – – Curiosity-driven research Basic Research Industry-driven research Policy-driven research • Mechanisms: – – Individual grants Collaborative research: bottom-up or following “roadmaps” Infrastructure, Human Resources Coordination (Art. 169, etc. ) • Total budget: expect substantial increase – European Parliament: 30 B€ (currently 17 B€)
Preparing for FP 7: Actions in 2004 • Workshops organised by IST/FET, ISTAG • Commission Green Paper – summer ‘ 04 • Your input and support are welcome … and needed!
