ASSAB have the experience to provide a variety of safe solutions to the fume containment problems found in most laboratory environments. Unlike many companies we are not tied to any one particular style or type of fume cupboard. This ensures that our designers are able to work with dedicated containment specialist engineers, thereby ensuring that we can arrange the best individual solution for each project. For example, a high level research laboratory may require a bank of specialist fume cupboards, interfaced to the Building Management System which is completely different to the requirements of a teaching laboratory, or to a pathology laboratory requiring ventilated specimen benching. Whatever the application, ASSAB always ensure that all installations exceed the relevant standards. ASSAB fume containment services include: High Performance fume cupboards Generic BS 7258 fume cupboards Ventilated benches Ventilated storage Bespoke fume containment Extract systems Environmental engineering packages Microbiological safety and LF cabinets Assab will assess each project individually and generally take on fume containment as part of a complete furniture package. In some circumstances when there is no benching element we may put the client in contact with a manufacturer directly as part of our commitment to ensure the client gets the best possible engineered solution combined with the best value.

Educational Fume Cupboards for demonstration use Assab can supply a variety of fume cupboard solutions, specifically for the educational environment. Fumetec Nexus D Schools & College type ducted fume cupboards This is a traditional ducted fume cupboard of high build quality that far exceeds the requirements of Design Note 29 and achieves the performance criteria of the more stringent BS 7258 recommendations. The units, available in widths of 1000 mm and 1200 mm can have clear toughened glass sides, backs and front sliding sash, allowing all round visibility. Services can include sinks, water, various gasses and electric’s. An internal light is fitted as standard. Different worktop materials are available, the most usual being either cast epoxy or solid grade laminate. The support stand can incorporate metal chemical storage cabinets that can be connected to the extract. Mobile models are available, with the stand having lockable castors. The top extract spigot can have a flexible duct, allowing the unit to be shared between laboratories if there is an available duct or just pulled out from the wall so that a group of students can stand around the unit. Mobile versions have bayonet fittings for services. Fumetec Nexus R and Labcaire carbon filtration fume cupboards These units are designed specifically as mobile schools fume cupboards and do not require ducting. They incorporate a carbon block that filters the air so that it is clean enough to pass back into the laboratory. They’ve undergone extensive testing by various educational bodies to ensure compliance with the latest safety standards. It should be noted that more regular maintenance is required for this type of fume cupboard than a ducted model but they offer superb versatility for the ever changing demands of modern science disciplines.
PVW ventilated workstations Protex PVW Ventilated Workstations are the ‘bridge’ in practical laboratory design between the open bench and the fumechamber when splash or explosion is not the main concern. When containment control with freedom of operator movement is essential to decant Winchesters, operate active transfer rigs or close examine tissue cultures the ventillated workstation is the answer. The unrestricted user approach, when compared with the essential structural demands of the fume chamber, are logical and well appreciated by the user. The horizontal flow direction of the containment airstream avoids the problems of equipment trays etc placed on the perforated worktop in downflow designs which can cause unpredictable extract patterns. An integral fan takes air from the room at low level and pressurizes a supply plenum located beneath the worktop. This air is then ejected in a controlled flow across the work surface through a series of front slots towards the rear ducted exhaust fan system. Optional in-line filtration can be included and they can be installed with a full 3 year warranty with commissioning and validated on-going SF 6 gas containment testing if required. Protex Ventilated workstations achieve the gas containment demands of BS 7258 for fume cupboards Compared to a fume cupboard PVW ventilated workstations have much better working access than a fume cupboard which can often prove restrictive for many applications as you are working within an enclosed chamber with a front sash. There is a reduced working width of 300 mm with a fume cupboard due to the sides. The PVW has a full width work surface. A fumecupboard sash may be raised above its 500 mm design opening to gain adequate access, which will significantly affect its containment values. Compared to a downflow bench PVW ventilated workstations have a more efficient airflow pattern. A conventional downflow bench extracts through a perforated work surface which will be obstructed by trays, equipment, samples etc. This will severely restrict the purge efficiency and create unpredictable containment. The PVW operates with the flow of air being directed in a laminar path towards the rear extract plenum, thoroughly purging the work surface whilst leaving it clear for maximum space. This airflow pattern allows the PVW to contain a much wider range of contaminants and hazardous fumes than a downflow bench. Protex ventilated workstations have a dished worksurface to contain spillage etc allowing easier cleaning after use than a downflow bench which has many crevices and traps below the work surface. Units are available in standard widths of 900 mm, 1200 mm and 1500 mm x 750 mm deep x 1650 mm high. Other sizes can be manufactured for specific applications as required. Optional fitments include: Toughened glass end screens mounted at both ends of the unit for air containment and work area definition. 1 No twin switched power point in high level service pod 1 No florescent light fitting in high level service pod 1 No light switch in high level service pod 1 No air input supply fan mounted within unit structure 1 No visual airflow alarm unit. Client Studies Sheffield Children's Hospital The first project was to supply 2 no carbon filtered fume cupboards, 1 no ducted fume cupboard, 3 no new class 2 safety cabinets and relocate 4 no existing safety cabinets. Second project was to supply 2 no ducted fume cupboards and a ‘budget orientated’ ventilated enclosure for a staining machine. Akzo Nobel Resinous Chemicals & International Paints divisions At Resinous Chemicals we supplied 6 no stainless steel lined fume cupboards with ports for remote controllers to process equipment, 1 no low level fume cupboard, 3 no standard fume cupboard and 1 no hood over ovens in 2 laboratories. The systems were installed with, and interfaced to steam powered air make up systems. At International Paints we worked closely with the client to develop specific stainless steel rear bench extraction to 10 laboratories and 12 no work stations with drying towers for heavy solvent use. We also installed 3 no new fume cupboards and refurbished 2 no existing fume cupboards. Transgenomic 2 no PVW ventilated workstations of extra depth and staggered height were installed for an application where very high containment was required but a traditional fume cupboard was too restrictive for the work practices. The units were 3000 mm wide overall and 1000 mm deep, front to back. Dynochem 2 no 1800 mm low level fume cupboards were installed with transparent backs and another enclosure 3600 mm wide and 1500 mm deep with 2 sliding sashes to each of the front and back sides. The extract systems were fabricated in rectangular section to fit in a very tight roof space whilst maintain correct velocities and low noise levels. BASF 1 no Fume cupboard, 3000 mm wide was installed in a room just 3000 mm x 3600 mm. It had an integral scrubber with recirculating sump to neutralise cyanide vapours and operated at 0. 8 m/s face velocity. This was linked to a steam powered ahu system and the noise levels, temperature comfort levels and lack of discernible draughts in the room are exceptional.
