Fuel cell vehicle Technologies
A fuel cell vehicle (FCV) or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) is a type of vehicle which uses a fuel cell to power its onboard electric engine.
This technology has only now begun to reach the automotive companies stage. Initial prices are in the range of $70, 000 but should come down the next couple of years.
Fuel cells create electricity to power an electric motor, generally using oxygen from the air and compressed hydrogen.
Such vehicles that is fueled with hydrogen produces only water and heat, but no pollutants, therefore it is considered a zeroemissions vehicle.
Unlike battery-powered electric vehicles, fuel-cell powered ones have a long cruising range - up to 650 kms. Also that takes only 3 minutes to refill the tank.
The major components of a typical Fuel-Cell Vehicle:
The first commercial fuel cell automobiles are being sold in California by Toyota and Hyundai.
Anyway some challenges must be overcome before these vehicles will be competitive with conventional vehicles, but the potential benefits of this technology are substantial.
