Fort Friedrichsburg was built in 1657 by the directions of Frederick I, ruler of Brandenburg, designed by Christian Otter and had the form of a square. There were a commandant's office, barracks, storehouses, a prison, brewery and bakery inside.

There were two casemates, the arch with the inscription “Fort Friedrichsburg”, and four round towers with euphonic names – Emerald, Ruby, Pearl and Diamond. In 1960 Friedrichsburg Gate was taken under the state protection, and in March 2007 was given to the Museum of the World Ocean.
