Freedom To Believe… Truth or A Lie

Freedom to Believe A Lie • God gave mankind the freedom of choice (Gen. 1: 16 -17; Josh. 24: 15; Jn. 5: 39 -40; 7: 17; Rev. 22: 17) • God gave mankind guidelines and consequences (Gen. 1: 16 -17) • Then they believed a lie (Gen. 3: 4)

Freedom to Believe A Lie • Lies of science • Lies of religion • Lies of culture / media • Lies of law-makers • Lies of family

Believing A Lie • A young prophet was told the truth (1 K. 13: 9) and then believed a lie (1 K. 13: 18) • Note that he was a good, young man who believed a lie

Believing A Lie • Note that he has good “reason” (from an old prophet) to believe a lie • Note that he suffered the consequences of believing a lie: disobedience and death

Believing A Lie • Some will not come to the truth (Jn. 5: 39 -40) • Some are carried off by human philosophy (Col. 2: 8) • Some believe what is false (1 Tim. 4: 1 -2; 6: 20; 2 Tim. 4: 4)

How to Avoid A Lie • Don’t assume you are being told the truth – ask for proof (1 K. 13: 18) • Test all things (1 Thess. 5: 19 -20; 1 Jn. 4: 1) • Distinguish what differs (Phil. 1: 10)

How to Avoid A Lie • Search the scriptures (Acts 17: 11)
