FRBR Aggregates as Collections J. A. Hourclé, code 4 lib-MDC, 10 Jan 2012
About Me
Not a rocket scientist
. . . but I did go to GWU Text <-- we had a “Presidential Spokesman” because “Floyd T. Box” is a cardboard box
. . . and was fired in 2003
My library cred: Note the Red Dwarf reference
FRBR Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records
What books do you have? • By William Shakespeare?
What are we cataloging? (for books) • The stories • The telling of the story • The publication of the story • The physical item
FRBR Group 1
Groups 2 & 3
My proposal for data
It works for images
It works for images
and different sizes
parts of images?
lots of images?
lots of bits of images?
FRBR Working Group on Aggregates
How are these related?
. . . just a box
the box?
the box?
How are these related?
Which edition?
Same episodes?
Same episodes?
Collections of Parts • Science Journal • Collection of Journal Issues • Collection of Articles • TV Show Boxed Set • Collection of Seasons • Collection of Episodes • Collection of Scenes
Whole-Part? What about the order of the parts?
Is successor to?
Successor?
Successor?
Successor?
Successor?
Successor? • Nothing, it was only a trilogy, that other stuff is crap
The successor relationship needs a context
Sucessor requires an orderable list • “Star Wars” movies, in the order made • “Star Wars” movies, in story order • “Star Wars” stories, in story order • “Star Wars” movies, directed by George Lucas, in the order made • Movies directed by George Lucas, in order of U. S. box office ticket receipts
We can perform operations on catalogs • “Star Wars” movies • Movies directed by George Lucas • “Star Wars” movies not directed by George Lucas: • • Empire Strikes Back Return of the Jedi
We can perform operations on catalogs • What Hugo award winners also won a Newbery Medal? • • The Graveyard Book any others? • What Hugo award winning books have never been on the NYT best seller list?
. . . for library collections • What Hugo award winners are not in our collection? • What Newbery Medal winners are not in our collection? • Are we the only library in our consortium with a copy of this work?
. . . for patrons • What books came in this week by authors I’ve checked out before? • What books by (author) haven’t I checked out before, and are available right now, in large print? • Are any of the Golden Globe nominees available, dubbed in Spanish?
Types of lists / catalogs • Collection / Holdings • Award winners • Best sellers • Patron records (if privacy policies allow) • Every ‘top 10’ list on the internet
Lists may change • American Film Institute’s top 100 movies • New York Times best sellers • Award winners cummulative (in a given year) vs. winners for a given year • Any fanboy list on the internet
. . . for science • What CMEs were not within 20 minutes of a solar flare? • What CMEs were identified in the Yoshiro catalog that were not in the St. Cyr catalog, or visa-versa? • Have any of these data been updated since I downloaded them?
But we can do this with ‘linked data’!
But we can do this with ‘linked data’! No, you can’t.
Linked Data • A bunch of assertions: • <entity> <attribute> <value> • Nothing about the context • • • Who made the assertion? (do we trust them? ) Was this a single item, or part of a larger set? Is this set exhaustive?
‘trust’ in Linked Data • RDF 4: • <entity> <predicate> <value> <source> • But can you encode the order?
Why would you obsess over crap like this?
What image is “next”?
What image is “next”?
What image is “next”?
What image is “next”?
What image is “next”?
What image is “next”?
What image is “next”?
What image is “next”?
The successor problem: • We have to define the ‘set’ to know if there’s a successor • Sets are completely arbitrary • There can be more than one order to a set • We have to define an order
Conclusions: • Whole/Part and Successor relationships in FRBR need additional context • We need simple interchange standards for sharing lists of. . . stuff • Although that opens a whole ‘nother can of worms • I need to stop putting together presentations at the last minute
