Outline • • • Heath O'Connell, Fermilab Overview Staff matters SPIRES projects Library acquisitions Facility issues LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 2
Overview The Information Resources Department staff provide all technical publication services, library services and Laboratory Services Section web design and development. Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 3
Staff • • 9 staff (2003) -> 7 Staff (2005) Rob Atkinson (Library systems, cataloging) Kathryn Duerr (Technical Publications) Margaret Miller (Astronomy/Astrophysics) Jean Reising (Web and Computing) Sandra Lee (Librarian, Purchasing, ILL) Sue Hanson-Taylor (Library Assistant) Heath O’Connell (Manager) Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 4
Staff changes 2003 ->2005 • • -1 ILL Asst. Lib. (Sandra added) -1 Computer Prof. (Jean and Rob added) -1 Tech. Pubs. Coord. (Kathryn switched) +1 Asst. Librarian: Margaret Miller. – M. S. in astronomy. – Works in astrophysics in SPIRES Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 5
Astrophysics in SPIRES • Astrophysics becoming more important to HEP in general and Fermilab in particular (first Lab to have an astrophysics group). • SPIRES has now loaded all astro-ph eprints, fully processes all new ones. • Have done 35, 500/63, 000 astro-ph • 600 Fermilab, 300 LANL, 300 LBL, 350 LLNL, 100 SLAC astro-ph eprints Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 6
Astrophysics (cont. ) • Now keeping current with astro experiments in SPIRES: SDSS, CDMS, Auger, ROTSE, GROCSE, SWIFT, FUSE, etc… • We have loaded all Ann. Rev. Astron. Astrophys. into SPIRES (over 600 articles, 1963 – present, 45 were astro-ph eprints) Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 7
SPIRES & DOI • Fermilab became Library Member of Cross. Ref. org (Jean). • DOI: Permanent url for article full-text. • Have now added 4, 000 DOIs to SPIRES database, mainly for IEEE journals (we subscribe to IEEE). • Will continue adding DOIs. Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 8
Theses (Fermilab and Other) • 1540 theses in collection – 523 Fermilab • 440 Fermilab theses online • Often contain information not available elsewhere (23 borrowed in last 3 years). Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 9
“Other” online collection • Began scanning old non-Fermilab reports our scientists had requested. • Linking SPIRES record to full-text at FNAL. • 120 records so far. • 90 from SSC, plan to do ~800 SSC. • Includes full-text of 20 Ph. D. theses (a request from FNAL scientist). Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 10
ILC Display • International Linear Collider: the next big HEP experiment after CERN’s LHC. • Intense international research activity. • Library has a display of ILC related printouts. Mainly conference talks, plus Quantum Universe/Way to Discovery. • Hugely popular. Constantly replenished. Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 11
SPIRES HEPJobs • Established over 2 job cycles. • Have over 450 physics jobs currently posted. • Receiving ~2500 hits per day during peak job-search period. • List currency of “open until filled” listings (monthly email check). Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 12
SPIRES VIDEO • Streaming videos in sites from: – Brookhaven – CERN – DESY – Fermilab – Michigan – Northwestern – Santa Barbara – SLAC Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 13
SPIRES HEPNAMES • One of the original databases. • 45, 000 records of info on physicists. • Fermilab updated 10, 000 records in 2005 and SLAC 3, 500. • 23, 000 (weeded) email addresses. • 7, 400 scientist-verified records. • 7, 800 records with Ph. D. advisor. Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 14
Library automation system • In-house SPIRES based circulation system going well. – Stable now, little development work. • 2, 000 books loaned in 2005. • Renewals are very popular. • Some staff members switching from Windows to Linux OS. Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 15
Book purchasing • Continue to buy books usually on recommendation of scientists. • Acquisition and ILL completely intergrated. • $35 k -> $22 k -> $15 k (incl. used books). • Place new books out for several months on display. Can be borrowed in this time. • No longer remove dust jackets. Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 16
ILL issues • Rush job: pay online fees ~$25. • Publishers, CISTI (Canada), Linda Hall Library (lindahall. org) • Would like more articles faxed rather than mailed. • Security problems setting up an Ariel server (a “smoke”). • What have other libraries used? Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 17
Journal subscriptions • Changed from IEEExplore (full text everything) to IEEEnterprise ($17, 500 for 1, 750 pdfs – 600 downloaded so far) + All Society (journals plus full-text back to 1995). • Considering sending pre 1970 Phys. Rev. and Ap. J. to storage. Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 18
Article Photocopying • • Many scientists wanted Elsevier online. Cost rather high, and have everything in print. Introduced a photocopying service. Sue will photocopy any article a scientist requests. • No further calls for expanded online service. Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 19
Customer service • Soon to be conducting online patron survey of Library. • Measure customer satisfaction. • Separate survey, in conjunction with Lee Robbins of University of Toronto, of the astrophysics center. Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 20
Library Move • As part of remodeling in Wilson Hall, Fermilab Library offices are being rearranged. • Each staff member will have own office (except for larger office for Sue and Sandra). • Book stacks must be moved! Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 21
Concluding remarks • SPIRES circulation system working well. • Reduced staff number. • Library adding value to SPIRES databases. • Always looking for better ILL services. • Surveying patrons. • Handling office move. Heath O'Connell, Fermilab LOWG October 2005, Oak Ridge 22
