There a lot of interesting places in London, such as Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, Tower Bridge and other.
The Swiss Tower. In recent years in the capital of Albion London there were many unique structures that affect people already one of its kind. One such facility was the Millennium tower, Swiss Re, built specifically for Swiss insurance company Swiss Reinsurance Company. The building height of 180 meters has a very unusual shape for that building got another unofficial name is “cucumber”.
The construction of the tower began in 2002, when a Swiss insurance company announced plans to locate its head office in the capital of England. The chief architect was appointed Norman Foster. He offered to give the future skyscraper in the shape of a cucumber!
However, Norman Foster tried to draw attention to the child first and foremost guided by the principles of sustainability and rationality. That is why the tower, Swiss Re looks original though, but it really fits into the architecture of modern London and looks kind of weird.
So inside the building are several terraced gardens that are clearly visible even from the outside. The so-called “winter gardens”, although considered part of the interior of the tower itself, however, is visually close to the urban landscape. That is why tower-cucumber so perfectly fit into the urban architecture of London despite its bizarre shape!
The construction was carried out quickly, and already in 2003 tower was completed. Only Swiss Re has 41 floors. Inside the skyscraper not only the establishment of a Swiss insurance company, but also several shopping malls and offices of third-party companies.
For the construction of the tower and Swiss Re were used only environmentally friendly materials. The tower itself is built with consideration of the basic laws of aerodynamics. The shape of the building has a high resistance to wind loads, and soaring spiral give the tower its spatial dynamics.
Even looking at the tower from the outside, it becomes clear that inside it is very spacious. Indeed, all areas of the unusual structures of Swiss Re quite large. Furthermore, thanks to the system of natural ventilation inside the tower never stuffy, and the impression that you are outdoors. This unusual system not only provides fresh air on each floor of a skyscraper, but also contributes to the heating of the building due to recycling of air already used.
In General, the Millennium tower, Swiss Re is currently building the future! All of the above make the tower one of the most eco-friendly buildings in all of London, as the cost of heating 41 -storey buildings is minimal.
Naturally, such an unusual structure simply could not remain unnoticed among different architectural communities. In 2004, the skyscraper Swiss Re won the prestigious Stirling prize and received the Emporis award, and the jury from the Royal Institute of British architects acknowledged the construction of the best skyscrapers in the world! The latter is particularly noteworthy, as in the history of the jury's unanimous decision was not taken!
THANKS FOR ATTENTION!!!
