Task and Organisation The Federal Institute for Occu-pational Safety and Health (FIOSH) (in German Bundesanstalt für Arbeits-schutz und Arbeitsmedizin, BAu. A) is under jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS). 3
Task and Organisation HISTORY (1): FIOSH was founded in 1996. Two institutes were merged: l The Federal Institute for Occupational Safety (Dortmund) l The Federal Institute for Occupational Medicine (Berlin) 4

Health and Work ability The health and the workabilities of the human being should be sustained and supported at work. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the sanitary risks and chances for groups and individuals and use the results preventively. 13

Safe Working Materials, Devices and Procedures Only Working materials and devices which are safe in application or produced in secure procedures should be used or brought into traffic. „Safe in an application“ means, that products within their entire life-cycle (evolution, production, use, maintenance, transportation and disposal) cause no or only acceptable risks for persons. 15

Advising, Information and Education The promotion and circulation of a culture of prevention needs the individual and public perception as well as a broad social debate. Health and safety of the working people are to be advertised actively. The provisions of advising, information and education are target for politics, management and labour, expert public and general public. 16
