Famous Politicians of Great Britain
Banastre Tarleton, 1 st Baronet Sir Banastre Tarleton, 1 st Baronet, GCB was a British soldier and politician. He was eventually ranked as a general, years after his service in the colonies and during the American Revolutionary War, and afterwards did not lead troops into battle. Tarleton was educated at the Middle Temple, London and went to University College, Oxford University in 1771, preparing for a career as a lawyer.
Charles Pratt, 1 st Earl Camden - was an English lawyer, judge and Whig politician who was first to hold the title of Earl of Camden. As a lawyer and judge he was a leading proponent of civil liberties, championing the rights of the jury, and limiting the powers of the State in leading cases such as Entick v Carrington.
Charles Townshend, 2 nd Viscount Townshend Bt KG PC FRS - was a British Whig statesman. He served for a decade as Secretary of State, directing British foreign policy. He was often known as Turnip Townshend because of his strong interest in farming turnips and his role in the British agricultural revolution.

George Byng, 1 st Viscount Torrington Admiral of the Fleet George Byng, 1 st Viscount Torrington, KB PC was a Royal Navy officer and statesman. While still a lieutenant, he delivered a letter from various captains to Prince William of Orange, who had just landed at Torbay, assuring the Prince of the captains' support; the Prince gave Byng a response which ultimately led to the Royal Navy switching allegiance to the Prince and the Glorious Revolution of November 1688.

He was commissioned as a Cornet in the 10 th Dragoons in 1768, and promoted to Lieutenant in 1772.
Robert Walpole, 1 st Earl of Orford, KG KB PC - known before 1742 as Sir Robert Walpole, was a British statesman who is generally regarded as the first Prime Minister of Great Britain. Although the exact dates of his dominance are a matter of scholarly debate, 1721 – 1742 are often used. He dominated the Walpole– Townshend Ministry and the Ministry and holds the record as the longest serving Prime Minister in British history.
Thomas Robinson, 2 nd Baron Grantham PC was a British politician and statesman. He notably served as Foreign Secretary between 1782 and 1783.
Thomas Townshend, 1 st Viscount Sydney PC was a British politician who held several important Cabinet posts in the second half of the 18 th century. His most enduring legacy is probably that the cities of Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada, and Sydney in New South Wales, Australia were named in his honour, in 1785 and 1788 respectively.
