Facilitating & Increasing Scientist Participation in E/PO Discussion Group Report Out Earth Science EPO Forum Meeting 19 May 2010
Goal: Identify short- and long-term goals for getting scientists involved in EPO involve (v. ): to engage as a participant “involved”: a collaborative partnership that is sustainable, clearly defined (hours of commitment, scope, impact, timely, content driven/relevant), educational and documentable with low scientist attrition Create a group of “Scientist E/PO Advocates”
Goal: Identify short- and long-term goals for getting scientists involved in EPO
Goal: Identify short- and long-term goals for getting scientists involved in EPO Items to consider: Scientists operate under different conditions (locations, funding sources, etc) and are subject to different politics Many scientists need education about E/PO and what it really means Need to express the importance of the scientist being involved in the effort (include in impact)
Goal: Identify short- and long-term goals for getting scientists involved in EPO Items to consider, cont’d: Need metrics for long-term goals Know your audience – connect scientists with parts that are engaging to them
Goal: Identify short- and long-term goals for getting scientists involved in EPO Process: 1. Identify scientists whom are already involved in E/PO - Through our missions and projects - ROSES E/PO awardees 2. Assess the list - decide if we want to increase our numbers - determine if there are content areas missing
Goal: Identify short- and long-term goals for getting scientists involved in EPO 3. Approach scientists to invite them to be a Scientist E/PO Advocate - create opportunities for two-way communication (educating scientists about E/PO, creating a “library” of E/PO sources for scientists) 4. Connect Advocates with appropriate E/PO opportunities 5. Re-assess our progress at next year’s meeting
Goal: Identify areas where scientists feel they need more information/support in order to feel comfortable participating in EPO. Incentives Location, research, talent/ability/experience Education about E/PO Funding Science connections Time Perception of worthiness Awareness
Goal: Identify areas where scientists feel they need more information/support in order to feel comfortable participating in EPO. Motivation Peer buy-in/pressure Relevance/personal connections Personal buy-in with E/PO project Level of understanding about educational standards
Goal: Make specific recommendations for activities/action items to pursue for increasing/facilitating new or existing scientist involvement in Earth Science E/PO Identified kinds of short, medium, and long term engagement projects for scientists to plug into (specifics defined by individual projects and programs) Identified a list of tools and services we can provide Scientist E/PO Advocates
Short, medium, and long term engagement projects Short term: • Exhibit staffing • Science writing Medium Term: • School visits (including prep time) • Developing a demonstration for a science concept • Mentoring students
Short, medium, and long term engagement projects Long term: • Curriculum development • Research with students • Partnerships with E/PO (educating E/PO specialists for current science content and relevancy, educating scientists about E/PO)
List of tools and services we can provide Scientist E/PO Advocates Media training E/PO proposal templates List of types of activities & their level of involvement Repository of talks SMD guidelines for scientists Case studies, testimonials, and anecdotes “Bigger picture” perspective of E/PO @ NASA
Action Items for the Group: Identify scientists in our individual projects and programs whom have already expressed interest/participated in E/PO activities • Specialties • Type of E/PO experiences Gather list of ROSES E/PO supplement awardees
Action Items, Cont’d Gather case studies, testimonials, anecdotes from scientists about their experiences in E/PO Continue list of tools and resources for scientists (put on SEPOF web space)
