Facebook: “Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you” While Facebook’s slogan isn’t very catchy it says quite a bit about the social platform. Facebook has taken a very utilitarian stance on providing a social network. They have created a framework and are expecting you to do most of the work.
One of Mark Zuckerberg's most valuable attributes as a CEO is his willingness to take heat and stay the course. So far, the course Mark has set has been so wildly successful that, in only 6 years, he has built the second most popular web site in the world. He, and Facebook, would be crazy to change this.

Revenues of Facebook
Most of Facebook's revenue comes from advertising. Facebook generally has a lower clickthrough rate (CTR) for advertisements than most major Web sites. According to Business. Week. com, banner advertisements on Facebook have generally received one-fifth the number of clicks compared to those on the Web as a whole, although specific comparisons can reveal a much larger disparity. For example, while Google users click on the first advertisement for search results an average of 8% of the time (80, 000 clicks for every one million searches), Facebook's users click on advertisements an average of 0. 04% of the time (400 clicks for every one million pages). Sarah Smith, who was Facebook's Online Sales Operations Manager, reports that successful advertising campaigns on the site can have clickthrough rates as low as 0. 05% to 0. 04%, and that CTR for ads tend to fall within two weeks. By comparison, the CTR for competing social network My. Space is about 0. 1%, about 2. 5 times better than Facebook's rate but still low compared to many other Web sites. According to Biz. Report. com, Facebook's low CTR is because Facebook users are more technologically savvy and therefore use ad blockingsoftware to hide advertisements, users are younger and therefore better at ignoring advertising messages, users spend their time communicating with friends and therefore have their attention diverted away from advertisements. On pages for brands and products, however, some companies have reported CTR as high as 6. 49% for Wall posts. A study found that, for video advertisements on Facebook, over 40% of users who viewed the videos viewed the entire video, while the industry average was 25% for in-banner video ads
Facebook IPO The social networking company Facebook, Inc. held its initial public offering (IPO) on May 18, 2012. The IPO was one of the biggest in technology, and the biggest in Internet history, with a peak market capitalization of over $104 billion. The company did, however, accept private investments from companies--often technology firms. When the number of shareholders crossed the 500 threshold, Facebook had to take the company public. Zuckerberg retains control over the company, despite its being a public entity. At closing bell, shares were valued at $38. 23, only $0. 23 above the IPO price and down $3. 82 from the opening bell value. The opening was widely described by the financial press as a disappointment. Despite technical problems and a relatively low closing value, the stock set a new record for trading volume of an IPO (460 million shares). The IPO also ended up raising $16 billion, making it the third largest in U. S. history.
