The State of the Union (SOTU) • Every President has to give Congress a progress report in January (except inauguration years). • Once upon a time, nobody paid attention. • Nowadays, it’s THE major White House policy speech every year. • Every self-respecting TV station carries the speech. • As citizens (or even residents), you’ve got an obligation to listen (my opinion).

Your assignment • Watch the SOTU and take notes. For TEN POINTS, give me the following information: – – 3 major foreign-policy announcements. 3 major domestic-policy announcements. The time of the speech. At least two “Lenny Skutnicks” (special guests the President mentions). • For TWO EXTRA BONUS POINTS, count the applause breaks. If you get the same number I get (within 10%), you win! • For THREE MORE BONUS POINTS, watch the response from some prominent Democrat. Take notes just like you did for the SOTU.
