Extensions to library services through the RIDING Z 39. 50 Gateway Peter Stubley University of Sheffield Library
what is a CLUMP? • An aggregation of catalogues – may be ‘physical’ – a union catalogue – or ‘virtual’– created at the time of searching • <http: //www. ukoln. ac. uk/dlis/models 3. html>

Clumping in Yorkshire
Z 39. 50 Gateway to Yorkshire Libraries • Yorkshire and Humberside Universities Association: • • • University of Bradford University of Huddersfield University of Hull University of Leeds Metropolitan University Lincolnshire & Humberside University of Sheffield Hallam University of York
Other Consortium members • Leeds Library & Information Services • British Library Document Supply Centre • Fretwell-Downing Informatics
Aims • Large-scale demonstration of Z 39. 50 • Enhancement of existing collaboration • Demonstration of cross-sectoral collaboration • Development of collection level profiles
Z 39. 50 common knowledge • Search discrepancies – attributes

Z 39. 50 common knowledge • Search discrepancies – attributes • Certainly not plug and play – More ‘Plug and prey’
Z 39. 50 common knowledge • Search discrepancies – attributes • Certainly not plug and play – More ‘Plug and prey’ • Could result in lowering of end-user confidence

Extensions to services • Access and authentication • RIDING Access Policy • Inter-Library Loans
Access and authentication • Free access; but authentication for ‘valueadded’ services • Different ATHENS 3 implementations across consortium members • Gateway authentication a pragmatic, immediate way forward
Access Policy (RAP) • A brand new agreement, resulting out of RIDING • Free access and borrowing to researchers in all academic and public RIDING libraries • RIDING Access Card
Inter-Library Loans • Software provides a direct link between search and request activities • Potential problems with – User eligibility – Holdings information, particularly for distributed library services – Existing installed ILL systems – RIDING as a project • Relations with BLDSC
VDX advantages • • • ISO ILL Protocol (ISO 10160/1) Automatic messaging for all ILL processes Tracking at each process stage Management of items supplied Automatic routing Ability to use non-standard e-mail formats
Where do we go from here? • RAP to be ratified in next few weeks • ‘Quiet’ roll-out from August 1999 • Full operational service from October 1999
Where do we go from here? • • RAP to be ratified in next few weeks ‘Quiet’ roll-out from August 1999 Full operational service from October 1999 Evaluation, particularly end-user reactions Inter-clumping A broader vehicle within the YHUA Document delivery/direct end-user charging
What did RIDING ever do for us? • Co-operation and working together for the common good • Preparation of an access policy across the region for the benefit of all researchers • Exploring pro-active interlending • Continuing good relations with BLDSC • Exploring cross-sectoral links
