What is reality? • Consensual, shared modus and locus of life, constantly re-negotiated • Ex. of reality distortion: http: //twistedsifter. com/2012/02/famously-doctoredphotographs/
Altered States (Ken Russell, 1980) Questioning consensual reality
What is Virtual Reality? VR is a way to access constructed digital environments It allows users to be at two places at the same time
Augmented Reality • Augmented reality projects a networked grid of information on maps or other layers of information
Reality missing Ex. : Taiwan
Private houses missing • • • One possible culprit is that people have asked to have their homes blurred for privacy reasons. Google explains on its Maps privacy page how to request this, and it's a relatively simple process. Famous people often file such requests. There's a gap in the Street View imagery outside Mark Zuckerberg's house in Palo Alto, for instance, although his home was visible in the past. But a lot of regular folk have asked to have their homes removed too, judging by the prevalence of blurred images in residential areas. Photo Wonder • • • As with a number of other selfie-centric apps, this puts an emphasis on cosmetic tweaks. Aside from the usual filters, Photo Wonder has some very detailed and specific tools for changing the tone of your skin, makeup, or hiding blemishes. There’s also a “thinify” option and a recently added “beauty leg” feature that makes your legs longer. The app also offers skin whitening. That’s not something that all cultures will appreciate, but it’s in big demand from some women across Asia. Photo Wonder is made by a major Chinese company. Photo Wonder also packs in an Instagram-style social network. (https: //www. techinasia. com/best-selfie-apps-list)
Ex. : Place Avoider • • Place. Avoider allows the user of a first-person lifelogging device to essentially blacklist locations from visual storage and sharing by matching the visual signature of a location against images of locations the user has designated as off-limits, such as a bedroom, bathroom or boardroom. The app flags such images for manual review before they are passed on to associated apps, such as photo storage or sharing. The idea, say Place. Avoider's creators, is to both help device owners protect their own privacy and thwart visual malware, such as trojans that may be looking for precisely this material. This got me thinking. The street, so the quote goes, finds its own uses for things. What if we are the malware in a different scenario? In other words, such apps, once they exist, can and will be used at some point as a form as "diminished reality" app, where the user is not the administrator. What if we are the malware? We know that applications such as Google Maps, Google Earth and Street. View already acquiesce to regulations that require obscuration of government installations, private companies' facilities in some cases, some brands, and private citizens faces and number plates—even as it works hard to decipher items like house numbers. In other words, technology is used to differentiate what we can see and not see, depending on the legal or ethical (or otherwise) standards of a particular place. Conclusion And sometimes, this wish for another reality allows us to come up with stunning images we wish were true.
Conclusion These new technologies equip us with the ability to challenge reality as never before. It is up to us to negotiate and navigate these new realities.
