European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research www. cost. esf. org BMBS Action: Cancer and Control of Genomic Integrity Years: 2008 -2012 (CANGENIN) - BM 0703 Participating countries (22): Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, FYR of Macedonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, + Australia Chair of the Action: Dr. Carina Holmberg-Still Rapporteur: Dr. Mario Vallejo Science Officer: Dr. Magdalena Radwanska Action Website: http: //research. med. helsinki. fi/cost/default. htm Scientific background Cancer is a clinically debilitating disease with an increasing incidence especially in the aging population. Advanced knowledge of factors contributing to genome integrity and tumorigenesis will provide a more integrative view of tumor pathogenesis, thereby promoting development of new innovative strategies for cancer therapies. Sari Jaamaa, Univ. of Helsinki Objectives defined in the Mo. U ØMain objective: To advance knowledge on dysregulation of cellular protective responses against cancer and of epigenetic events involved. ØSecondary objectives: . Working Groups WG 1: Cellular DNA damage signalling pathways Claus Storgaard-Sørensen, Univ. of Copenhagen, Denmark WG 2: Chromatin modifications and transcriptional control Bruno Amati, European Institute of Oncology, Italy WG 3: Cancer epigenetics Rolf Ohlsson, Karolinska Institute, Sweden WG 4: Cancer model systems and translational research Jos Jonkers, Netherlands Cancer Institute, • Establish a network with top-level high impact research groups in genomic integrity, transcription control and cancer epigenetics; • Promote scientific interactions and excellence in Europe; • Promote rapid dissemination of information; • Bring together experts in cancer biology, animal models, and translational cancer research; • Support young investigators by providing interactions, technological advancements and intellectual feed-back; • Provide scientific and methodological research training for students.
