Scientific context: • Feed must be considered not only in terms of production efficiency but also in term of their ability to promote health • Feed safety is an essential prerequisite for food safety • The modern consumer demands natural, fresh and nutritious foods but also functional foods that can have health benefits. • The role of animal nutrition in designing foods closer to the optimum composition for long-term human health are becoming increasingly important. • This feed-to-food approach makes it possible to reposition animal products as key foods for the delivery of important nutrients to humans. i. e. Adequate nutrition vs. Optimal nutrition COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme 5 ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract
Scientific objectives • To develop an integrated and collaborative network of research groups that focuses on the roles of feed animal nutrition in improving animal health and also the quality, safety and wholesomeness of human foods of animal origin. • Examine the perception of consumers as regards the effects of feed production processes on animal health and on the quality and safety of the resulting food products. COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme 6 ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract
Working groups WG 1 Feed and food for health WG 3 Feed supply • Nutritional issues • Effects of animal nutrition on: • the health of the animal • the nutritional composition/bioactivity of animalderived foods WG 2 Feed Safety • Feed and food safety concerns • Contaminants occurrence, intake, carry over • compliance between feed and food limits COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme 7 • • Structure of feed supply chain changes in feed formulations Feed technology Traceability authenticity issues WG 4 Consumer concerns & percepition • Consumer perceptions of livestock production systems. • Attitudes of consumers to scientific innovations in feed production • Information sources for consumers ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract
Results vs. Objectives • WG 1 Feed and Food for Health: – Effects of animal nutrition on the health of the animal – epidemiological evidence relating milk consumption to chronic disease outcome, – opportunities to improve milk fatty acid profile by animal nutrition. . • WG 2 Feed Safety: – – new analytical methods control and reduction of feed contaminants monitoring of carryover from feed to food modeling COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme 8 ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract
Results vs. Objectives • WG 3 Feed Supply – analysis of animal feed supply – industry point of view – purchase of high quality and safe ingredients in a global market – new trends in use of lipids in animal nutrition • WG 4 Consumer Concerns and Perception – analysis of consumer’s concerns and perceptions regarding • effects of feed production processes on animal health and on the quality and safety of the resulting food products • terrestrial and aquatic livestock production practices • risks and benefits associated with food production chains – of note from WG 4: FEED is perceived as particularly vulnerable in the livestock chain. COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme 9 ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract
Significant highlights (1/4) • Feed for Health: 1 st International Workshop [joint meeting WG 1, 2, 3, 4] – Milan, Italy on March 16 th-17 th – 120 participants from 22 countries/25 oral pres. – Fruitful meeting between researchers working in related areas but seldom get in touch • Webpage: www. feedforhealth. org – More than 30 updates (February to June 2009) – Proceedings & Presentations on line – Workshop/WG meeting videos – Annunciaments/events presenation – News overview COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme 10 ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract
Significant highlights (2/4) • 2 nd FEED-SEG Symposium – Parma, Italy, 30 th, 31 st of March and 1 st of April 2009 • 2 nd SAFEED-PAP workshop “PAP Detection: Europe-Asia Exchange of experiences” – Qingdao, China, on 21 st– 23 rd April 2009 • Article: COST-Feed for health: un nuovo hub scientifico, Sistema Università, June 2009: a new scientific hub in food and agriculture area COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract

Significant highlights (4/4) • Proposal: EMMC (Erasmus Mundus Master Course) “FOOD OF LIFE; the science of animal-derived foods”. OF LIFE – Training in both animal science and food science – Outputs relevant to both consumer and animal health. • The essential underpinning components are: – Food: meat and milk products derived from all the relevant farm species – Life: effects of nutrition on the health of the consumer, and effects of production systems on the health of the animal • International collaboration: Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Spain, Italy, UK, Canada, New Zealand COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract
Challenges • Position of the European Parliament 5 February 2009 adopted at first reading with a view to the adoption of Regulation (EC) No. . . /2009 on the placing on the market and use of feed • Art. 13 claims – claims concerning optimisation of the nutrition and support or protection of the physiological conditions are permitted COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract
Challenges • 3 rd International FEED SAFETY Conference will be joined by the COST Action FA 0802 [WG 2 & WG 3] – Wageningen, NL, on 6 -7 th October 2009 • Next Feed for Health Conference – Very draft theme: The role (impact) of feed for fish and monogastrics resulting in food improving the health of elderly (e. g. prevention cognitive decline, osteoporose, vitamin D status, muscle mass. . ) – Norway, May-June 2010 COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework Programme 15 ESF provides the COST Office through an EC contract
