EUREKA a catalyst for collaboration EUREKA’s history • Initiated in 1985 with 17 members from Western Europe • From 1992 - EUREKA opens its doors to new members from Central and Eastern Europe • From 1998 - encouraged project participation from anywhere in the world, allowing industry to ‘work with the best’ • currently 34 members, 3 NIPs, 1 associate country 10

EUREKA a catalyst for collaboration EUREKA individual project E! 2508 GENEFEC DNA-based test using early cell mutation to detect cancer Participants: Germany, Norway Budget: 1. 2 m€ Timescale: 2000 -2002 The new DNA-based test aims to identify patients with curable pre-cancerous cells in the colon, rectum and pancreas. The new test, which takes less than two hours, is now used by Norway's public health service. 23
