The first Estonian online publication, the homepage of Tartu University Library, was published in 1992.
Neti web crawler collects all HTML pages (4 million in total) under the domain. ee The catalogue of the Neti search engine includes around 15 000 web sites in about 2000 servers.
Bibliographic control of Estonian web publications started in 2000. • Monographs • On-line newspapers and magazines with the ISSN identifier.
National Library of Estonia has relied upon the selection criteria of national bibliography while collecting and archiving web resources. The selected material includes about 1% of the total national web resources. There is a need for separate selection criteria for archiving web resources and recording national bibliography.
Criteria used in the recording of Estonian web resources in the national bibliography. • Publisher or the author of the web resource Resources within the national domain name space (. ee) • Language and territory Estonica in the web context? What extent we should record the Estonian translations of publications of international organisations?
• Public web sites • for restricted user groups. The Estonian national bibliography contains only public web sites including web resources that have a fee to be accessed.
Web sites of • Individuals • Organisations. We aim to register the web sites of organisations and institutions, and also the web sites of distinguished individuals in the fields of science and culture.
• Resource is published, edited Material that in conventional publishing terms would be considered “grey literature” can have the same level of visibility and accessibility on the web as a “trade” publication would have in the conventional print media.
• Types of material (text, sound, images) textual Web resources The Estonian national bibliography does not include sound and video recordings available on the web.
• Hierarchical relationship within and between web publications raises an issue of a different sort. • Parallel formats and parallel carriers About half of the web publications registered in the national bibliography have in parallel been issued in print.
National Library of Estonia has selected and recorded in the national bibliography • 1741 online publications: – online 340 newspapers – 190 online magazines – 135 dissertations – 45 statistical compilations – 23 textbooks and other educational material – 70 works of fiction
Use and re-use of national bibliography records A bibliographic description has been compiled for each archived web resource, while most of them receive a full level bibliographic record according to MARC 21 format, ISBD and AACR 2.
