People are hurting!
…and it’s not just at the computer…
Objectives: • Early detection of “at risk” employees & tasks • Prompt and effective interventions to reduce risk • Close monitoring and follow-up of high risk cases and work groups. Try to focus Ergo Program resources on complex & high risk tasks. • Develop employee self-reliance and supervisor accountability • Monitor and evaluate Ergo Program performance • Move ergo ‘upstream’ reactive → proactive

3. Improve Ergonomics Training Programs • Practical (esp. ergo for supervisors) & useful • De-emphasize ergo “hardware” and “proper posture” and emphasize a real-world problemsolving approach • Emphasize interactive training and demonstrations vs. lecture • Emphasize EMPLOYEE self-reliance and SUPERVISOR accountability…monitoring problems, managing workloads and implementing ergo recommendations
4. Speech Recognition • Pilot test of Dragon Naturally. Speaking v. 9 • Assistance from IT to help deploy software • ID equipment: headset/microphone, computer speed/memory • Development of LBNL macros for compatibility & productivity • Group, online, and individual training • Support, esp. for new users
5. Remedy Interactive • Web-based self-assessment & training • Each employee rated in red, yellow or green zone of ‘risk’ based on combination of discomfort and posture scores • Individual & group data available for follow-up • Easy generation of e-mails to individuals and groups based on selfassessment results & ratings
Track program progress
6. Ergo Advocate Program • First line of defense and rapid response system - Be aware of ergonomics situation in the Division - ID problem postures and implement simple “quick fixes” - report complex problems to Safety Coord and/or Ergonomist • Ergonomic Evaluations and Interventions - Perform “preventive” ergo evaluations or review Remedy results - Use ergo tools (e. g. , Checklists and Ergo Product Catalog) - Monitor progress of ergo modifications for employees - is it working?
Is this rocket science?
Accountability Managers & Supervisors Networking Ergo Program Team Safety Coordinators Ergo Advocates Self-Reliance Employees
Ergo Advocate Program…what’s in it for you? Ø Catch ergo problems early & enhance employee comfort Ø Fast response time to improve work conditions Ø Provide insight as to the ergo needs of the Division Ø Allow ergonomists to focus on people with discomfort & high risk Ø Integration of sound ergonomics principles at Division level - ISM Ø Share techniques with supervisors… access ergo products more efficiently via E-Buy Ø Impart ergo techniques to foster employee self-reliance
