Austrian ENUM Trial Platform Ø Mission: Ø Co-ordination of activities for the Austrian ENUM trial between the trial partners Ø Tasks: Ø develop and approve documents beside the regulatory framework compulsory during the trial Ø enable communication between the trial partners Ø monitor trial activities Ø monitor international ENUM standards and trial activities Ø gather results and experiences Ø serve as a basis for an Austrian ENUM forum required for commercial implementation Ø Members: Ø RTR, NIC. AT, Telekom Austria, Infonova, AOSA, Kapsch, ÖFEG, Telcordia Richard Stastny March 2003 8
Scope of the ENUM Trials Ø Provide a DNS based infrastructure in ENUM Tier 1 and Tier 2 Ø Basic administration and validation by ENUM Registrar (ENUM Service Provider) and an ENUM Tier 1 Registry including the necessary provisioning processes Ø Web-Portal for registration of ENUM Subscribers and for simple manipulations of the DNS records in ENUM Tier 2 Ø ENUM Client-SW for ENUM Users to query the ENUM database Ø Vo. IP Applications for ENUM Subscribers and Users (sip and h 323) Ø Evaluation of the services provided and of the user feedback Ø Monitoring of and interworking with other trials Ø Evaluation of standards and feedback to the relevant bodies Ø The Austrian and VISIONng Trials are Feasability Studies Ø Purpose: find out first Products and then Markets Richard Stastny March 2003 9
Tasks of the Trial Partners Ø Inner circle (must sign Mo. U): Ø RTR responsible for policy framework (Mo. U holder) Ø Tier 1 Registry (nic. at) Ø Registrar + Tier 2 Nameserver provider = ENUM SP Ø e. g. Telekom Austria Ø Must sign Mo. U to get registrar (admin-c) and nameserver handle (tech-c) Ø Outer circle: Ø Client SW Suppliers - Infonova, AOSA (Siemens, Alcatel), Kapsch, Telcordia Ø Provisioning SW Suppliers – Infonova Ø Application Provider - Telekom Austria (Vo. IP), any others Ø Consulting, standards - Oe. FEG Richard Stastny March 2003 10
How ENUM works technically Ø Take a full E. 164 number and create a DNS entry in a single highly defined and structured domain Ø The search for resources on the internet associated with e. g. +43 1 79780 becomes a DNS look up to: Naming Authority Pointer Resource Records 0. 8. 7. 9. 7. 1. 3. 4. e 164. arpa Ø The lookup finally retrieves pointers (NAPTRS) with URIs to IPbased applications, e. g. : • IN NAPTR 10 10 "U" “E 2 U+voice: h 323“ "!^. *$!h 323: richard 23@telekom. at!". • IN NAPTR 10 10 "U" “E 2 U+sms: tel“ "!^. *$!tel: +43 664 420 4100!“. • IN NAPTR 10 10 "U" "E 2 U+email: mailto“ "!^. *$!mailto: richard@stastny. com!". Ø The Client chooses the further action Ø The NAPTR RR are defined in RFC 3403, the URIs in RFC 2396 Richard Stastny March 2003 11

Validation within the trial Ø Basic requirements for commercial deployment: Ø ENUM subscriber shall be the assignee of an E. 164 number valid for the ENUM trial and the number shall be in operation with a TSP. Ø It has to be verified that the ENUM subscriber is the named entity Ø Registration shall cease if first item is no longer valid. Ø Interim solution for trial: Ø Only known subscribers Ø later identification via billing address possible Ø Currently only geographic and mobile numbers Ø Number shall be listed in phone directory, data need to be the same Ø Validation done by Registrar Ø Personal Numbers for ENUM use under discussion Ø De-validation with periodic check (will be automated) Ø Evaluation of improved validation methods during trial (ongoing) Ø Open issue: corporate ENUM subscribers Richard Stastny March 2003 13
WHOIS Ø ENUM is DNS Ø Processes have to be similar to normal domain name administration Ø For operation of DNS the storage of e. g. : Ø Domain Name Holder Ø Administrative Contact Ø Technical Contact Ø in a database is necessary (WHOIS-DB) Ø Currently there is still a discussion, which data are stored in the WHOIS-DB and which data are publicly available. Ø Regarding the Austrian ENUM Trial it has been decided temporarily that all data are stored and are public available. Ø Domain Name Holder: Ø admin-c: Ø tech-c: Richard Stastny ENUM Subscriber Registrar Nameserver Provider March 2003 14
ENUM Trial for UPT Ø Telekom Austria is Member of the VISIONng Association Ø The mission of VISIONng is to provide a framework for the deployment of worldwide inter-domain and multi-vendor IP Telephony services based primarily on ETSI TIPHON specifications Ø ITU-T has assigned part of the country code for UPT to VISIONng for deployment of a Universal Personal Telecommunication Service: +878 10 Ø In May 2002 VISIONng as Assignee of the numbering range +87810 requested an ENUM Delegation from RIPE NCC and got approval from ITU-TSB Ø Telekom Austria is therefore implementing in parallel to the Austrian ENUM Trial with +43 also an VISIONng ENUM Trial with +87810 Ø In October 2002 it was decided by VISIONng, to use +87810 also for ENUM-only purposes Ø This decision caused the joining of Free World Dialup (FWD) to VISIONng in January 2003 Richard Stastny March 2003 15
