State of play of the Programme - Three calls for proposals launched. * 1 st Call for Standard Projects. May 2009 * Call for Strategic Projects. May 2011 * 2 nd Call for Standard Projects. December 2011 - 56 running projects worth EURO 140 million. - Last call for proposals “Step 2 - Full Application Forms” under evaluation (results available from mid-June) - JMA for the next Programme is the Autonomous Region of Sardinia upon decision of the participating countries. Promotion of socio-economic development and enhancement of territories Measure 1. 3 Strengthening the national strategies of territorial planning by integrating the different levels, and promotion of balanced and sustainable socio-economic development • Specific objectives - To share experiences between the local authorities involved in the partnership in order to facilitate territorial planning and monitoring in the energy and waste management sector - To support the design and implementation of local action plans on sustainable energy and waste management • Expected results - Coordination mechanisms between local authorities and relevant stakeholders established - Energy and waste action plans developed and endorsed at the appropriate levels in Jordan, Lebanon and Italy -Four observatories established and made operational on energy and waste management in Jordan, Lebanon and Italy -“Sustainable awards” for the most performing local authorities granted in Jordan and Lebanon SCOW Launching Conference 2013 June 12 th
Waste treatment and recycling Cluster Approved projects / partnerships SCOW Selective collection of the organic waste in tourist areas and valorisation in farm composting plants • Call for Strategic Projects. Priority 2/2. Waste treatment and recycling • Specific objectives - To develop a low cost, low tech, high quality biowaste management integrated system, ensuring sustainable methods for the collection and treatment by involving all relevant waste treatment stakeholders and enhancing their knowledge • Expected results - Integrated and improved waste collection and recycling organic waste system, with small farm composting plants developed in the agricultural holdings situated near the tourist areas - Increased quantity of collected biowaste in the areas concerned by the project (approximately 7. 000 tons per year) - Quality compost obtained from treated organic waste (approximately 2. 000 tons per year) and used for agricultural purposes - New jobs opportunities created by the collection, transport and treatment processes of organic waste - Additional source of income made available for farmers thanks to the compost sale SCOW Launching Conference 2013 June 12 th

Waste treatment and recycling • Specific objectives - To develop a cross-border, incentive based, recycling system to promote environmentally sustainable practices at a grass root level - mainly schools and universities - using a state of the art technology platform, supported by an awareness and communication program • Expected results -High number of young people engaged in recycling activities (approximately 10. 000) - Unified recycling program implemented in Mediterranean countries with 200 “Reverse Vending Machines” installed in schools and other educational centers - Large quantity of waste collected (around 20 tons of plastic bottles and cans) - Youth and a broader community sensitized about the importance of recycling - Legislative framework improved for encouraging waste recycling SCOW Launching Conference 2013 June 12 th
Waste treatment and recycling Cluster Approved projects / partnerships MED 3 R Plateforme stratégique euro-méditerranéenne pour une gestion adaptée des déchets • Call for Strategic Projects. Priority 2/2. Waste treatment and recycling • Objective spécifique -Impulser en Méditerranée une gouvernance institutionnelle à forte valeur ajoutée transfrontalière en matière de politique publique des déchets et concrétiser une approche avant-gardiste pour une gestion efficace, durable, intelligente des déchets traités non plus comme un problème mais comme une ressource d’avenir • Résultats attendus - 13 plans de gestion des déchets définis ou améliorés en fonction des contextes propres aux territoires concernés (8 aires urbaines partenaires du projet et 5 villes) -13 actions pilotes sur différents flux de déchets - restauration, organique, plastique, dangereux – réalisées - Cycle des déchets optimisé: production réduite (5 à 10%) et valorisation augmentée (25%) - Plateforme stratégique transfrontalière instituée pour l’accompagnement des acteurs clés en charge de la problématique des déchets - Capacités et compétences institutionnelles et de la gouvernance renforcées en matière de gestion de déchets SCOW Launching Conference 2013 June 12 th
