The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a Parlament monarchy. The power of Queen Elizabeth II is not absolute. It is limited by Parliament. The legislative body, Parliament, consist of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
General elections, for all seats in the House of Commons, must be held at least every five years. In Great Britain there is no written constitution, only customs and traditions.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland occupies the territory of the British Isles. They lie to the north-west of Europe. Great Britain is separated from the continent by the English Channel. The total area of the British Isles is 325 000 km 2. The mountains in Britain are not very high. Scotland is the most mountanious region with the highest peak, Ben Nevis.
It is not very cold in winter and never very hot in summer. There is no ice on the lakes and rivers in winter. It rains very often in all the seasons. The weather changes very often. Sometimes fogs are so thick that it is impossible to see anything within 2 or 3 metres.
