EMEA MEDIA CENTRE “CONTENT LIFECYCLE – A GREENFIELD APPROACH” 7 SEPTEMBER 2011
OVERVIEW • SPT Channels have been operating in Europe beginning with • • Spain since 1998. Central Europe came on-line in 2003 with the CE origination move to Encompass Media (formally Ascent) in 2006. Over the years, rapid expansion of linear channels in CE, in Western Europe and now CIS and emerging markets. Need to deliver large volumes of content for multiple platform delivery: web, VOD, mobile, etc.

WORKFLOW & PROCESSES - CURRENT
OVERVIEW Migration from tape to file-based workflows… • • • GROWTH PIECEMEAL The workflow has become complex and inefficient creating roadblocks in growing the business (time to market, etc) SILO BASED APPROACH Workflow processes grown organically – as needed Storage requirements in channel office regions EXPENSIVE • High performance storage • Movement of bandwidth heavy media files across dedicated connectivity and/or Enterprise WAN
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES - CURRENT • Movement and processing of high bit rate files and with the growth of HD, the file sizes are becoming larger. Higher performance hardware to support processes – HIGH COST! • Full resolution files are moved across all origination and channel office locations to support content prep processes, OAP, S&P edit and review. Larger capacity connectivity is also required increasing operational cost. • With the separate and dissimilar workflows existing at the channel offices there’s no opportunity to leverage various instances of broadcast material (elementary video or audio files) across all the channel locations or load-balance workflow as needed. • A duplication of effort in a non-automated environment occurs in each channel office location requiring more hardware and human resources to achieve the deliverable requirements. Many of these systems are not compatible with each other resulting in multiple combinations of in-house and 3 rd party vendors employed to process and localize broadcast/digital material.
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES - CURRENT NO master Media Asset Management system in place to track content status, workflow process and content life-cycle across the region
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES - CURRENT NO master Media Asset Management system in place to track content status, workflow process and content life-cycle across the region NO archive or backup of media at channel locations
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE Ingest, cataloging and logging of master broadcast content occurs at the centralized Media Centre (MC) location. A duplicate proxy file is created simultaneously.
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE Proxy file is sent to the channel locations for OAP review & off-line editing, S&P compliance EDL generation and delivery to dub studios & subtitle houses
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE Limited movement of bandwidth-heavy media files
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE For media delivery to channel offices, full resolution clips would be partially restored from the MC central archive for OAP conform based on the EDL created from the proxy edit session – at channel office locations An S&P compliance EDL is forwarded to the MC for an auto conform to a TX file Utilizing MAM or off-line FCP
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE Transport of full-length, full-res SD & HD files across the WAN significantly reduced Less costly hardware is needed at the channel office locations
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE Standardized workflows in place at channel offices managed by the MAM Opportunity to share content and resources across the region
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE Standardized workflows in place at channel offices managed by the MAM Opportunity to share content and resources across the region Media Centre based
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE Standardized workflows in place at channel offices managed by the MAM Opportunity to share content and resources across the region Content prep for linear & digital would occur at the MC requested by the channel office personnel using the MAM
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE The MC system would support the transport and management of broadcast materials to Singapore origination (SPTL), to edge server devices at a remote locations and to digital customers
WORKFLOW & PROCESSES PROPOSED MEDIA CENTRE
MEDIA CENTRE - BENEFITS Open platform architecture • Ties into various current production/broadcast systems Flexibility • Potential to integrate into systems from various vendors (dubbing, subtitling, etc) Agility • Easily customized workflow, processes based on changing needs Scalability • Can grow the system as new linear & digital business grows Efficiency • An environment where personnel can find, view and edit content across multi-format environments including their desktop Visibility • Monitor the process of key elements of each stage of content prep on a “dashboard”, making it easier to find and remove workflow bottlenecks Business continuity • Platform in place for disaster recovery – SPTL Singapore, Lat. Am, US…etc.
