What is Those Who Excel? • Those Who Excel (TWE) is a recognition of student excellence for grades 6 & 8 along with selected High School Seniors. • Every 6 th grade teacher with a classroom can nominate a student. • Each Middle School nominates up to 3 students. • HS Seniors, intending to go into education, apply and are chosen by a committee of ETA teachers. • Each HS in U-46 has at least 1 scholarship recipient of $1000—last year added a scholarship for Future Teachers Club member! • In May, a recognition night is held.
What is Scholarship Bowl? Recognizing excellence costs money so……… Scholarship Bowl is the fundraising event that supports Those Who Excel. Scholarship Bowl is entirely organized and supported by the Elgin Teachers Association along with many local businesses who believe in public education.
Condensed History of TWE Approximately 35 years ago, Kathy Thomas, ETA VP, proposed the idea of recognizing students who excel as nominated by their classroom teachers. Those Who Excel was begun in order to publically and formally recognize these students. Next came the question of how to financially support Those Who Excel.
History continued This led to the many discussions of how to fund Those Who Excel. Finally the suggestion of bowling was settled upon and Scholarship Bowl was born. ETA has continued to support TWE not only through our daily dedication to classroom instruction and students, but through behind the scenes work that makes Scholarship Bowl and Those Who Excel a success year after year.
How is the money raised? ETA/TWE have sold Hawks & Bulls Tickets Each school site is asked to contribute a themed basket to be raffled off. Some sites contribute more than 1 basket. Local businesses are contacted and asked to donate an item for raffle. These items are placed into categories. Raffle tickets are sold at each school usually through the ETA Rep. Tickets are brought to the Scholarship Bowl in April and winners are notified shortly after the bowling event.

Where does the money go? All money raised through Scholarship Bowl supports Those Who Excel. All work is done by volunteer ETA members. The money raised from Scholarship Bowl funds a Recognition Night in May which includes such expenses as mailing of invitations, certificates & pins for each student, etc. Scholarship Bowl also funds the $1, 000 scholarships awarded to each of the HS Seniors selected by the committee. ETA/TWE supports each New Teachers Club.
