El verbo tener The Verb “To Have”
• Spanish verbs fall into different groups, and each group is conjugated a little differently. • If you’re going to master Spanish verbs like tener, you need to be able to identify which group a verb belongs to: regular (follows regular conjugation rules for -ar, -er, and -ir verbs), – stem-changing (morphs depending on how you use it in a sentence), – spelling-changing (has consonant-spelling changes in some forms to follow pronunciation rules), – or reflexive (reflects the action back on the subject of the sentence).
Verb Tener (teh-nehr) (to have) is a tricky -er verb; sometimes it’s regular, and sometimes it’s not. In the present tense, it has an e-to-ie stem change in all but the yo and nosotros forms. Notice that the yo form is completely irregular.
The verb: tener = to have Yo tengo = I have Tu tienes = You have Ella tiene = She has El tiene = He has Usted tiene = You have Nosotros tenemos = We have Ellos tienen = They have Ellas tienen = They have Ustedes tienen = You all have
Singular Yo tengo - I have Tú tienes - You have Él/ella/Ud. Tiene - He/she has / you have
Plural Nosotros tenemos - We have Ellos/ellas/Uds. Tienen - They/you all have
Los usos • To express ownership: –Yo tengo un gato –I have a cat
Los usos • To express age: –¿Cuántos años tienes? – How old are you? – (How many years do you have? ) –Tengo doce años – I am 12 years old – Literally (I have 12 years)
Special Phrases • Tener hambre: to be hungry –Tengo hambre • Tener sed: to be thirsty –Tengo sed • Tener sueño: to be sleepy – Tengo sueño
