El Preterito
El Preterito So far, you have worked with the present tenses in Spanish. There are 2 past tenses in Spanish. We are going to learn the preterite tense.
The Preterite Tense The preterite is used for talking about actions completed in the past.
Preterite of regular - AR verbs To form the preterite of a regular –AR verb, you drop the -AR, then add the correct ending to the stem. When you drop the –AR of the verb, you are left with the stem. Hablar -> Habl Comprar -> Compr
Preterite of regular –AR verbs -é -amos Yo hablé -aste x I talked, I did talk, I was talking -ó -aron Tú hablaste Nosotros hablamos We talked, we did talk, we were talking x You talked, you did talk, you are talking Él habló Ellos hablaron He talked, he did talk, he was talking They talked, they did talk, they were talking
Aguas (careful!) This tense can be tricky because the accents are so important and really change the meaning = Hablo = I talk. Habló = He/she talked.
Limpiar- to clean Yo limpié Nosotros I cleaned, I limpiamos did clean, I was cleaning Tú limpiast e Él limpió x Ellos limpiaron
Cocinar – to cook Yo cociné Tú cocinas te Él cocina Nosotr os cocina mos x Ellos cocinar on
