Culture Shock: what is it? • Symptoms: • Unwarranted criticism of the culture and people • Heightened irritability • Constant complaints about the climate and food • Continual offering of excuses for staying indoors • Utopian ideas concerning one's home culture • Continuous concern about the purity of water and food • Fear of touching local people • Refusal to learn the language
• Preoccupation about being robbed or cheated • Pressing desire to talk with people who "really make sense. " • Preoccupation with returning home
Choices that will enhance your experience abroad… • First, fight the urge to retreat and join the group activities and outings. Mixing, meeting new people and forcing yourself to become part of the community will help you. • Initiate conversations with your student or their family members. Don’t always wait for them to ask you questions. Offer to help out in the house! • It’s only a week and a few days…. and this is a rare and valuable opportunity you’ve been given…. so, take advantage of it!
Las Fallas • An annual festival that ends on “Dia de San José” March 19 th. (aka Father’s Day) • All year, groups that are called “Fallas” (similar to the clubs for the Mummer’s) work to build monument structures that are satirical and critical of society. • All monuments (called “Fallas”) are then judged and awarded prizes. “Ninots” are miniature monuments that also win prizes. • Other activities such as the: desperta, mascleta, crema, desfile de flores, etc are part of the celebrations leading up to the 19 th. (the crema is on the night of the 19 th)
