Notes Use the present progressive to talk about things that are happening right now. You can use it with the present progressive to talk about the weather. It is raining. It is snowing. To form the present progressive, add –ing to the end of most verbs. Verbs with special spellings will be covered later in the lesson. They are teaching. He is looking. 5
Spelling Verbs in the –ing Form Look at the chart. Base -ing form Rules for most verbs: work eat Add –ing. live write sit plan say sleep listen think working eating living writing sitting planning saying sleeping listening thinking For verbs ending in a consonant + e: Drop the e and add –ing. (Do not double the consonant: Writting) For verbs that end in one vowel and one consonant: Double the consonant and add –ing. Do not double the last consonant before –ing when the verb: ends in w, x, or y. ends in two vowels and one consonant. has more than one syllable (when first syllable is stressed). ends in two or more consonants. 6
