Pupils’ opinions Sian Brooks Lucy Tancock
In our eyes • A friendly service for the elders in our community. • A way to expand our learning of leadership through helping others. • To help the elders understand modern technology and increase their confidence towards it.
Spread the word… We visited the elders of the Pontarddulais Community Council. • We added the event to the school’s newsfeed and newsletter • We also placed posters in libraries, post offices and local shops • By telling people around our school and the community the word of mouth did it’s job and spread the news.
Community spirit We wanted to create a link between the outside community. • We decided the best link would be through the elders and technology. • After last years brilliant results we wanted to keep up the good standards of our assistance.
This phase We started up Educating Elders in November, we were lucky to have one person turn up. After Christmas things really livened up and more people started to come. We guessed this was because people received technology for Christmas.
Community participation hours All participants could use the hours for: Welsh Baccalaureate hours Duke of Edinburgh ASDAN
What did the elders say? I found it a bit too noisy. Is there a quieter room? The pupils are brilliant and so knowledgeable! This is brilliant – So useful. I will definitely be here next week The boys who I am working with are so helpful – Really bright lads! You’ve taught me how to use an i. Pad, can you do the same for my smart phone?
Pupil’s comments I have grown fond of my elder. I was very nervous but I am feeling much better now. I was able to help with the questions that were asked. This is really good, I am enjoying doing this. I like chatting. What happens if I don’t know the answer – What do I do? Teaching is really hard work – I’m shattered
