History of Western Men’s Basketball • There have been 13 • coaches since basketball started in 1913. My father was an assistant coach from 1971 -1976 and head coach from 19771979 here at WMU.
Coach Bill Spaulding • He started WMU • • • Basketball in 1913 -22. His record was 70 wins and 40 losses. They did not play MAC teams during this era. They stuck mostly with smaller schools or even high school teams. Coach Herbert “Buck” Read • Graduated from Kalamzoo • • • Central High School. Took over in 1922 -49 inventing what we now know to be the fast-break in basketball. Read Field house was named in his honor. His record was 351 wins and 171 losses. He left a record that will probably never be beaten at WMU. Recognized as one of the best basketball coaches in the nation.
Coach Bill Perigo • Followed the great Read • • • coach from 1949 -1952. He had a record of 41 wins and 27 losses. His 1949 -1950 team broke the record of points scored in a game from 93 to 94 against Miami. Coached the first team the tie for first place in the Mid-American Conference.
Coach Joy Hoy • Was a basketball and football • • player at WMU. Replaced Perigo in 1952 and coached till 1958. His record was 58 wins and 71 losses. Left WMU coaching staff to study for doctoral degree at Indiana University, then returned as Athletic Director. Coach Don Boven • Played at WMU during the 40’s. • Played professional basketball for • • • the Milwaukee Bucks and returned to coach at WMU in 1958. He coached from 1958 -66 having a record of 76 wins and 112 losses. In 1963 -64 Read Field house held a dedication during halftime of this year. Coach Eldon Miller • Started his career in 1970 to 1976. • • My father came with him as his assistant; Dick Shilts. Coached the greatest team ever at WMU in 1975 -76. Won the MAC championship. They went to the NCAA tournament and won the first round, then lost the second round to Marquette who ended up winning the national title. Miller left WMU with a record of 86 wins and 68 losses. Coach Dick Shilts • Just happens to be my father. He • • took over the position from Coach Miller. He coached from 1976 -79 with a record of 28 wins and 56 losses. His first season was his best. They packed the house at Notre Dame beating Toledo in 1977. Faced one of the toughest schedules ever played at WMU. He is currently in his 25 th year at Kalamazoo Valley where he is Athletic Director, Men’s Basketball coach, and Golf Coach. http: //www. dickshilts. com
Coach Les Wothke • Started his career at WMU • • in 1979 till 82. His record was 42 wins and 41 losses. Came from Winona University in Wisconsin. His 1981 team were Co. Champions of the MAC. Coach Vernon Payne • Coached from 1982 -89 • • with a record of 69 wins and 126 losses. He played on a championship basketball team for Bobby Knight. He remains at WMU as the University Recreation Programs and Facilities. http: //iuhoosiers. com/varsityshop/
Coach Bob Donewald • Coached from 1989 -2000 with • • a record of 151 wins and 155 losses. Had one of the only teams invited to play in the National Invitation Tournament. Where they lost to Notre Dame. The second team ever in the NCAA tournament. Lost in the second round to Stanford, who went on to the final four. Had ten straight non-losing seasons. Coach Robert Mc. Cullum • Coached from 2000 -2003, • • with a record of 44 wins and 45 losses In 2003 won 20 games, only the third coach to have won 20 games in a season. Coach Steve Hawkins • 2004 season is his first at • • Western. WMU is his first Div I head coaching position. Was an assistant at WMU for 3 years, and was head coach at Quincy University (Div II) where he would 137 games in 9 years.
