Background Ø Company Information • Dulle Veterinary Centre is existing commercial animal health service provider and working in Southern Highlands based in Iringa , Tanzania. • From September 2016 It was contracted by GAVLMED and ILRI to 2 upscale the ECF ITM vaccination through distribution of ECF Vaccine in Iringa , Njombe and Ruvuma. • This area it has great potential for ECF ITM business as it was estimate to have a population of about 524, 687 cattle • This Project will increase coverage as well as capacity and we will have trained the vaccinators(private veterinarians and public livestock field’s officers) in the first year and imparted in them business skills. • To create awareness of the product, demand adoption of the livestock farmers in three regions • To vaccinate on a commercial basis and plough back the money especially in the second quarter and buy more ECF vaccine. Key activities undertaken during the period with Outputs. ACTIVITY Ø Attended the ECF Project review Meetings in Bagamoyo from 27/11/2017 to 29/11/2017 Ø First ECF vaccinators training were conducted in iringa region and 11 vaccinators were trained from 28 -29/09/2016 at Iringa. Ø The participants were from three districts (Kilolo 2, Iringa rural 3, Mufindi 3 and Iringa municipal 3). Ø Second ECF vaccinators training were conducted in Ruvuma region and 6 participants were trained from 21 - 22/10/2016 at Songea. Ø The participant were from four districts (Mbinga 1, Namtumbo 1, Tunduru 1 Songea Rura 2, Songea municipal 1). Ø ECF mobilization and awareness creation meetings to Livestock keepers from dairy Interest group(DIG) were carried out in all 6 Producer organization(PO) in Iringa and Njombe ( Name of the POs MUDCO, DADCO, IDGOC, Mshikamano, Wawahanjo, Lukamo Ø ECF awareness campaigns through community radios networks and TV programs in Ruvuma, Iringa, and Njombe

ECF Mobilization and awareness campaign were carried out in POs from June to to date ØAIM • To make farmers understand the importance of vaccinating cattle against ECF. • Improving the health and production of animals through ECF vaccination. • Increasing number of cows vaccinated against East Cost Fever (ECF) • Reducing calf's mortality rate caused by ECF Ø Results/ achievements • Out of 548 DIGs 145 (Dairy Interest groups) were reached by sensitization Meeting ( 26%) • Out of 11, 208 farmers 3, 845 were trained through sensitization meeting conducted in Njombe and Iringa regions farmers ( 34%) • 1044 farmers were motivated to use ECF ITM vaccination • 3000 cattle to be vaccinated at the end 2017 in collaboration with East African Dairy development (EADD) 6

Achievements Ø Out of Target of 39 Vaccinators 19 were trained • Iringa 11 • Njombe 2 • Ruvuma 6 Ø Total number 5 are certified by VCT to Vaccinate • Iringa 5 • Ruvuma 0 • Njombe 0 Ø Total number 9 are Active vaccinators Ø Iringa 5 Ø Njombe 2 Ø Ruvuma 2 NB: Training of 20 new Vaccinators will be held in Njombe on 7 th to 9 th December 2017, as follows: Iringa 5 Njombe 10 and Ruvuma 5 9

Achievements • From September 2016 to August 2017 Dulle Veterinary centre was able to deliver 3, 000 ECF Vaccine doses to the field in all three regions and the number of vaccination carried out was 3, 000 ( The target were to vaccinate 6000 by the end of year 2017. Challenges • Many livestock farmers in these regions are unaware of ECF ITM vaccination. Massive ECF Vaccination awareness and sensitization campaign are needed in these regions. • The price of Liquid Nitrogen has gone up even in the Government plants. This makes storage of vaccine expensive; however availability of the Liguid nitrogen has improved • Most trained ECF Vaccinators are not active this affect performances, out of 19 trained vaccinators only 9 are performing vaccinations. • But another reason may be due to livestock farmers in these regions are unaware of benefits of the ECF vaccine down in Ruvuma , Iringa and Njombe.

RECOMMENDATION AND COCLUSION A Massive ECF Vaccination awareness and sensitization campaign are needed in these regions. After being knowledgeable farmers becomes aware on importance of vaccinating their cows against ECF this helps in achieving the expected goals. As realized after starting the ECF sensitization in POs in June there is Increase demand of the vaccine • Adoption of ECF ITM vaccine is increasing among smallholder farmers • Therefore it is highly recommended that National Sensitization campaign targeting Livestock keepers to stimulate demand. It is also recomendad that the project search and come up with recommendation the best way 17
