Ph. D. study remains popular and is now considered as an essential pre-requisite to Ph. D. study remains popular and is now considered as an essential pre-requisite to achieving higher positions in industry and in research-oriented institutions. The cost of educating students to Ph. D. level is, however, often so high so that the number of Ph. D. positions available is lower than a generation ago. Another factor is that the real or perceived difficulty in obtaining well-paying secure jobs after completion of a Ph. D. deters many able students from continuing their education to postgraduate level.

Well-trained geologists hold the key to solving many of the major problems faces by human society, including supply of mineral resources and fossil fuels, and potential climate change, as well as man’s exploration of our universe.

Resilience to environmental hazards Assess risk and reduce vulnerability of people and infrastructure to environmental hazards and emergencies – such as extreme weather events, volcanoes and earthquakes, space weather, pollution, novel diseases and invasive species. Manage environmental change Improve predictions and make informed choices about the behaviour of the whole human-Earth system and how we respond to changing climate, land use, chemistry of air and water, biodiversity, etc. Discovery Science Curiosity-driven, fundamental questions about how the Earth works, how it changes, how it interacts with human activities. Leads to unexpected, often transformational benefits for economy and society.
