As many of you know I hate giving speeches so this is going to As many of you know I hate giving speeches so this is going to be “ short and sweet” as the saying goes. . My theme this year is " ESA – What A Wonderful World" We have the world of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, with the Dream Houses, the Radio-thons, Bunco parties and many other money raising projects. There is the world of Colorado Easter Seals with the mountain of towels, pillows, craft supplies and some new projects for the coming year. We have Hope for Heroes with clipping coupons, making blankets and cards, sending care packages to support that world. Each Chapter has their “own world” of organizations they support. Among them, “Support the Girls”, which sends bras to Africa and El Salvador, making 200 lunch bags for Colorado Special Olympics events, Warm Hearts and Warm Blankets, the list goes on and on. And don't forget the world of friendships and support that each and every one of us have made over the years. I honestly don't know what I would be doing if I didn't have ESA in my life. I want to thank you for putting your faith in me to guide Colorado ESA in the following year. Rita Martin 2014 ~ 2015 State President

Thank you so much for the wonderful convention in Ft. Morgan. Beta Epsilon always Thank you so much for the wonderful convention in Ft. Morgan. Beta Epsilon always outdoes themselves. And a great big thank you to Nancy Cameron and our I. C. rep, Kim Kummer for my beautiful installation ceremony. There were ten of us who attended I. C. Convention in Portland OR in July. We had a great time, and the weather cooperated. Those of us who arrived early were treated to an “unheard of” thunder and lightening storm on Sunday. I had the honor of carrying the Colorado State flag for the opening ceremony. The flags were presented in the order in which the states were chartered. During the third session B. J. Clark announced her successor, Charlotte Carloni. Charlotte started as an intern at ESA headquarters several years ago. A hearty Welcome to Charlotte. I know she will do a fantastic job. Oregon offered many tours of the surrounding area, including a post tour to the Mt. St. Helen Volcano. It is hard to believe it has been 40 years since it erupted. Congratulations to Colorado! We took 2 nd place in raising monies for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital this year, and 1 st place, oh. . I'll let Joan tell you. Thank you all for your hard work and long hours on the Dream Homes, Radiothons and the other numerous projects you do for St. Jude. Fall will be here soon, along with Fall Board. I hope you will be able to come to Winter Park. The scenery around the YMCA camp is awesome! This is not the Estes Park Camp, but rather the Winter Park Camp. Directions are included after the Fall Board Registration form. I want to let everyone know that although the deadline is August 15 th for reservations, I will continue to accept them until I get all the beds filled!! So please get your reservation in as soon as possible. Friday night we will continue the Literacy Program. The YMCA has a program in place so all the books will be left for them. Please bring books and we will put labels in them. Saturday night is Game night so bring your favorite game to play. There will be snacks and drinks.

IC Board Literacy Ideas In keeping with IC president Vicky Jones’ focus project, at IC Board Literacy Ideas In keeping with IC president Vicky Jones’ focus project, at the 2014 Leadership Conference each member of the IC Board presented their own unique literacy project idea. Ranging from take-home literacy kits for school-aged children to purchasing large print books for elderly with eyesight problems. These ideas can really help you boost your literacy programs in your chapter and our state. Their ideas are listed below. Perhaps one of these ideas will work for your chapter. • Book Buddies – Provide children a stuffed animal to read to and a book. • Books R Fun – Motivate members to share books with St. Jude and their living facilities. • Green Eggs and Ham – Host a birthday party for Dr. Seuss, gifts will be books to be donated. • Lifetime Learning in your neighborhood – Provide information on and /or visit your local library for a meeting. • Grocery Store Library – Give children the opportunity to pick out books while grocery shopping with a parent. • Stork Story Time – Give a baby shower with books provided to agencies or chapter members with new babies. • Adopt a Class- Spark interest in reading among the members of a single grade school class. • Take Home Literacy Kit – Provide children living in poverty with books to take home. • Warm Starts – Provide low income families with a warm blanket and a book to read to their child as they grow. • You’re Not Alone – Bring friendship and companionship to the elderly or homebound. Tips for Reading with Children (great tips to give to parents to help them read to their children). More information on the above projects along with small and large ESA labels for your books can be found on our Colorado web page, please go to esacolorado. org. This can be incorporated with other projects that have been introduced by past IC presidents. Domestic Violence, Hope for Heroes, Easter Seals, St. Jude Children’s Hospital just to name a few

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION “Passport to Oregon” What a great week, the Oregon members put on INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION “Passport to Oregon” What a great week, the Oregon members put on a wonderful convention. The Red Lion on the River – Jantzen Beach was right on the Columbia River. There were so many fun tours, Saturday night started with the ESA Foundation Dinner Cruise, Sunday was the Portland Garden Tour; you toured the Japanese Garden and that magnificent Rose Garden. Roses of every size, color and fragrance. Did you know that there are roses that have no fragrance at all? Monday was the Mt. Hood Tour & Salmon Bake. It was warm when we reached the Timberlake Lodge and the chef was preparing the salmon to smoke and bake for our lunch. Needless to say the salmon was wonderful, and the rest of our meal was delicious. Tuesday morning took members on the Gorge Waterfall Lover’s Adventure Tour. There are some really awesome waterfalls in the area. That afternoon there was the De. Vine Winetasting Adventure Tour. Workshops were going on during the day, we had fun at the “Nibbles & Sips – Tasty Possibilities. The Beverage Manager created a drink for the weekend called “Marionberry Margarita” in honor of IC President, Vicky Jones. Tuesday night got started with the ESA Foundation Fun Fest with lots of auction items. The St. Jude quilt that was made by Kathy Lloyd brought in over $3700 for the St. Jude Scholarship Endowment. It definitely was a fun filled evening. Wednesday had workshops all day long. Members spent the day cutting material for the Santa Hugs. We have a new pattern and instructions that utilizes the material more wisely and an easier way of putting the Hugs together. It will be on the IC web page as well as our Colorado web page.

The Wednesday Night Mixer – Welcome Party was a blast. Vickie Farris has her The Wednesday Night Mixer – Welcome Party was a blast. Vickie Farris has her candidates for office come in costumes for “Frozen”. We saw some crazy looking snowmen, we laughed till tears ran down our faces. Thursday morning got started pretty early with the Opening Ceremony with the parade of states carrying their flags and a tribute to our “Hope for Heroes”, it was quite a moving event. The regional councils had their meeting in the afternoon followed by state caucuses, state night out and the new IC Council’s Trivia Night. Never a dull moment. Friday had us cheering for all the awards that were given out. The Colorado awards are listed on a separate page in the Golden Lamp. The night concluded with the IC Challenge – “Under the Big Top” St. Jude Event. Saturday, Terri Olson, IC Chaplain presented the Celebration of Life for all our members lost this past year. They will all be missed and will remain in our hearts. We were all engrossed listening to our Key Note Speaker, Jana Flaig, “Finding the Courage for the Next Step”. She is a cancer survivor and decided that fear was not going to be her dream killer. Jana shared encouragement wrapped up with lots of humor and provided great tips to knock out fear that can discourage us. Satruday Night Banquet – “An Evening of Wine & Roses” was a grand event Our congratulations to Vickie Farris, 2014 – 2015 IC President and her new board.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGIONAL COUNCIL ROUNDUP Was held at the Rocky Mountain Easter Seals Camp, ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGIONAL COUNCIL ROUNDUP Was held at the Rocky Mountain Easter Seals Camp, Empire, CO on August 8 -10, 2014. Forty ESA Sisters from Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming met for a relaxing and fun weekend. Beautiful weather! After a lo-o-o-ng time going from Denver to the camp because of the construction at the twin tunnels, we started things with a Margarita Party then had to decorate cupcakes like high heel shoes! Great combination! The person who decorated the Best Shoe was FIRST IN LINE - at meals, bathrooms etc. Jan Mittan from WY was the Princess Winner. It was great to have IC President, Vickie Farris, IC Corres. Secretary, Cleoria Glenn and IC Awards Chair, Sandy Alexander with us. Four very young (18 ish) brand new members who are working to start a new chapter in Denver spiced up the atmosphere!! So much energy! Joyce Fuller and Judy Kendzora were the Chefs du’Jour and kept us overfed with wonderful meals!!! Thank you so much! RMRC voted to place a full page in the 2015 IC Convention Program advertising the 2016 IC Convention in Loveland, CO and made a $500 donation to the B J Clark Grant through the ESA Foundation. Some also donated sheets, pillow cases and towels The Co-Chairs for the 2016 IC Convention, Mary Humphrey and Bobbi Massey gave a workshop on the convention and filled many of the offices they needed for the convention committee. G’day From Australia! Did you know that we live 8000 miles apart? That’s a G’day From Australia! Did you know that we live 8000 miles apart? That’s a 2 week boat ride, a 15 hour plane ride, but only a nanosecond using the World Wide Web. Leslie Stevens and I are hoping to bring our sisters closer together, regardless of the distance. My name is Lisa Zachau. I am the Publicity Chairman and Newsletter editor for Queensland State Council 2014 -2015. I used to live in Oklahoma where I first committed my life to ESA 8 years ago. My husband found himself being transferred to Australia on business and I was extremely excited to find I will still be surrounded by my sisters. Unfortunately, Australian Sisters of ESA have touch and go relationships with our North American Sisters. Leslie and I hope to bring an end to that, while bridging the gap across the Pacific Ocean. We invite any of you to submit an article to introduce yourselves. Tell us about your lives with or without ESA influence. Consider us your long, lost cousin and let us hear about your goings-on. ESA Australia would like to share our experiences as well, and we hope to do so with every newsletter. Queensland’s Newsletter is published about the 15 th of every month with a deadline few days before, on the 12 th. You can read our past newsletters on our website at www. esaaustralia. org. au. They are posted as soon as they are completed and you will find them in the Member’s Only page which will require a one-time registration. Me (AP), Vicky Jones( IC Pres), Jenny Hendriks (AP) As you may have seen in the Jonquil, we had a momentous occasion last year by turning a half century old. We were congratulated by our IC President, Vicky Jones, who attended our celebration along with 12 sisters from around the US, two of which were your local sisters, Rita Martin and Sandy Alexander. We can’t seem to stop talking about all the fun it was to meet them and make new lifetime friendships. You will find many photos on our Facebook page: ESA Australia Though we still contribute some of our efforts to St. Jude’s, we spend a lot of time supporting Australian organisations such as Cancer Council of Queensland, Leukaemia Foundation, Mater Foundation, and National Council of Women of Qld, just to name a few. We also concentrate in our local communities. We have 5 branches in Queensland. Beta Omicron (Brisbane South), Alpha Pi (Redcliffe), Beta Epsilon (Gin Gin), Alpha Rho (Mackay), and Alpha Epsilon (Proserpine). All are extremely dedicated to their service and have a lot to say about their exceptional efforts. I am very proud to know and love each and every one of them. I hope to see some introductions by the next deadline of 12 September. Simply hand your submission to Leslie and she will send them to me. I will gratefully publish it in the ESA Queensland Council Newsletter. Our 50 th celebration along with our American guests December 2013

Leadership Workshop 2014 State Convention The “Chapter Tool Kit” was introduced at State Convention Leadership Workshop 2014 State Convention The “Chapter Tool Kit” was introduced at State Convention during the Leadership Workshop. The purpose of the Tool Kit is to provide resources to help you and your chapter with the tools you need to have a successful year. In the past, a booklet was provided to the incoming Chapter President; now the information is available to everyone. The “Chapter Tool Kit” is located on the homepage of the Colorado website www. esacolorado. org under the Yearbook in a new section titled “Chapter Tool Kit”. It is highlighted in red; if you don’t see it, right click with your mouse on the homepage, then click on “refresh”. If you do not have access to the website, please contact your In-Service officer or myself and we will send you the handouts. The following topics were presented during the workshop to kick off the Tool Kit: v Resources for the Chapters: Have you thought about the resources that are available? Here is a thumbnail sketch of resources available: your In-Service Officer, the Colorado State website, the Colorado Facebook page, the Headquarters website (both the Public and Member Center), also the Jonquil and ESA News. v Importance of Paying Dues and Tax Facts: Why is it important to pay individual and chapter dues on time? Why we should report our financial activities? v Parliamentarian Tidbits: Was that a Bylaw and a Standing Rule? What are the proper ways to take care of business? Check out the eight steps to obtain action on a motion. There’s also a List of Common Phrases to help navigate the process; a common mistake is to say “I make a motion to …” The correct phrase is “I move to …” v Turn-Around Funds: Follow the “how to” guidelines to use the ESA Foundation Turn-Around Funds. v Recruitment: We learned first-hand from Kappa Zeta how they started their new chapter and are continuing to recruit members. Recruitment information is available on the HQ website under the Member Center. In the near future, we will be adding Chapter Officer Duties. You will be able to download the files and revise them for your chapter needs. If you would like to see other topics added, please contact the Web Team. A big thank you to Candie Patino, Webmaster, for listening to the idea and I want to just mention real quick, designing the Tool Kit. how proud I am of all of you! If you haven’t heard the news, Colorado received first place at IC Mary Humphrey Convention for the total dollars Sr. Past President, 2014 -2015 donated of $5, 244 for Disaster Fund - 2013 ~ 2014. Give yourselves a big hand; it couldn’t have been done without your generous donations. Jr. Past President

I am working on another State project for my year as Sr. Director. I will have more on this at Fall Board and am excited about the possibilities it may bring. It is low impact, fun and EVERYONE can contribute. I need your help with something else, Sisters. This year marks the 40 th Anniversary that ESA has been working with the Kids of St. Jude. International is suggesting a "Celebrate ESA" event and I would love for our State to do something commemorating this remarkable event. You help save many, many children's lives! See you at Fall Board Lori Anderson Sr. St. Jude Coordinator

This year Zeta Rho is challenging any chapter (Theta Eta) to make more blankets This year Zeta Rho is challenging any chapter (Theta Eta) to make more blankets and/or quilts, and also to bring the most twin size sheets, pillow cases, towels, wash cloths and any other thing needed by either the Camp, Wings or the Easter Seals Day Program. I have it on good authority that Zeta Rho has already made about 10 quilts…So the gauntlet has been thrown!! Lets see who will stand up to the challenge. And for those who have not heard, Colorado took second in monies raised for Easter Seals at IC!!! Congratulations to all!! This year I have something planned that will more than double our monies raised if we can pull it off – more on this at Fall Board. Hope to see a whole bunch of you at Fall Board! I know next year will be even more fabulous! As the new year rolls out, just a few reminders. If you are the President of a Chapter or Council, please get a subscription form into me, right away, even if you get your Lamp online. This email list is sometimes used to get last minute iformation to you and it is important to have accurate email addresses. Officers please check the Suggested Article Submission Schedule on the web site to see when an article should be sent in. Also please remember to send me your "Did You Know" factoid. This is a fun way to get name/face recognition to our Members and share a bit of knowledge. If you don't remember when you were scheduled, just send it to me and I will make sure it's in your month. As you read under International News, I have made contact with our Sisters in Australia to try to bring our Continents a bit closer together. I will be sending in articles from the State level, but I would love to get at least a few Chapters to volunteer to send in some articles for this. Just a quick bio, WITH PICTURES! If you are interested, please email me. How much fun would it be to have Australia Sisters specifically recognize Colorado Sisters, at IC!!! I am also trying to get in contact with our Canadian Sisters, but thus far have had no response. Will keep trying though! Hope to see everyone at Fall Board! Keep you fingers crossed. . . Hi everyone, Remember when Lorrie Moore was hobbling around state convention with a boot Hi everyone, Remember when Lorrie Moore was hobbling around state convention with a boot on her foot, well she had her surgery which went very well. The doctor had to end up putting six screws to fix the break. She is doing great. Well here we are almost the end of July and schools will be back in full swing soon. Don’t forget to donate supplies to your favorite school if you have one. A few of members of Zeta Rho went to Haley Holt’s wedding reception. What a beautiful bride. The couple were married in Mexico back in May. I can remember the day Haley was born and to be around to see her as a bride sure makes you feel old. The luau was held with the ladies and gentleman from Hearts and Hands Rest Home. Everyone had a great time. Of course we all ate too much. Our president, Rhonda Westcott, had a quilting bee. Everyone who attended bought their fleece for cutting and tying, The fleece blankets will be delivered to the Easter Seals Office. Betty Jean Marshall and Donna Lea Van Stone of Alpha Gamma were invited to join the group, when we did the quilts for Warm Hearts/Warm Babies they were there to help us. Zeta Rho hasn’t had a lot going on this summer. So don’t have a lot to report on. Looking forward to getting back in the groove of meetings and getting caught up on all that has happened to everyone over the summer break. I heard from Joan Snyder that the jewelry I sent with her to IC convention took 2 nd place. I looking forward to all the news the ladies have to tell us about IC. I just know that they all had a wonderful time. Well until next time, continue to have a great summer and looking forward to seeing everyone soon. Hugs in ESA, Shirley Telinde Chi Kappa gals have been taking a rest for the summer and are looking forwarding to getting back in the swing. A planning meeting is scheduled for late August with our newly elected President Chloe Mc. Clantoc. We will be sitting the new Dream House once a date is set. Hi Colorado Sisters, We always say we are going to take it easy during Hi Colorado Sisters, We always say we are going to take it easy during the summer, but we seem to still keep busy. In June we had our annual chapter Installation and welcomed Kathy Fischer as our new president and thanked Wendy Gleason for a great year. Later in the month members made noodles and then worked a station during the Lake to Lake Triathlon. July we helped with the Wahlert Family Reunion. We prepared all the food, (but the meat), decorations, and served the food for 100 people. It was a delightful afternoon. August 1 st we worked the annual Wild West Relay, at the Wellington Exchange. Great fun and always enjoy talking to all the runners. They are always appreciative of the volunteers that help at all the exchanges. Finally once a month some of our chapter sisters help at the Community Kitchen. Besides all the activities many members have taken trips and just enjoyed the summer, which is almost over. See you at Fall Board! Pam Mc. Gee From the Wonderland of E. S. A We are finding that our Wonderland is much different than Alice's was. She could eat and drink all sorts of things to change her size. Drinking tea could make her taller. Eating a cookie shrunk her. Yeah, well, we drink tea and run around all day and eating that cooke just adds to our GIRTH!!! Our adventures began with breakfast and a tour of a museum displaying collections of all sorts of things including buttons, electric trains and yo - yos. Later in July, we hope to attend a concert in the park. In August, four of us will attend Rocky Mountain Regional Roundup and a contingent hopes to traverse to Fall Board Until next time, this is the Mad Hatter Karen

. . . and I thought to myself. . . Hummingbirds are the tiniest . . . and I thought to myself. . . Hummingbirds are the tiniest birds in the world and get their name from the humming sound produced by their wings when flying. They are very smart and can remember every flower to, and how long it will take a they have been flower to refill. They use their tongue to lap up nectar from flowers and feeders. A hummingbird will visit an average of 1, 000 flowers per day for nectar and need to eat on average 7 times per hour for about 30 -60 seconds. (so fill your feeders!) Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly both forward and backwards; their wings rotate in a can circle. They full fly 25 - 30 miles per hour and twice a year, travel over 2 thousand miles during migration. ted by: Contribu phrey um Mary H If you were to stroke a cat a billion times, you would generate enough energy to light a 75 watt lightbulb for 1 minute?
