TODAY’S GOALS ~ 1. To gain an understanding of your options for next year’s classes as well as the process for completing the course selection forms. 2. To complete your course selection form & hand it in TODAY!

REGISTRATION PROCESS Make sure we can clearly read your name and grade level. Indicate if you are an Academy or Fundamental student on the course selection form. If you are an ARC (Academy of Robotics and Construction) student, you must choose the next level ACADEMY course.

ACADEMICS o Counselors will choose your academic classes for you based on your past test scores, grades, and teacher recommendations. We will consider your input, especially in selecting AP and Dual Enrollment(DE) courses so be sure to circle those AP/DE classes that you are interested in taking.

Rank your elective choices o. You will rank the electives you are interested in taking from #1 (the one you want most) to #10 (if I can’t get my other choices, I could take this). o You cannot choose an elective you have already received credit for.

Keep in mind… o Consider rigor in classes. Challenge yourself academically with Honors, Advanced Placement, or Dual Enrollment classes. Keep in mind Bright Futures requirements when selecting courses. If you have questions, ask your guidance counselor. o If you fail to turn in your completed course request form, a counselor will chose your classes for you. o If you have failed a course, you will be required to retake the course, and this will take the place of an elective. If you do not pass the FSA Reading assessment, you will likely be placed in a reading support class.

Elective choices to meet GRADUATION requirements o Fine Arts (1 full credit)/ Practical Art course that meets the Fine Arts Requirement o HOPE (1 full credit) 2 years of ROTC = HOPE waiver & Fine Art waiver OR complete 2 seasons of sports & complete waiver.

NEW!!! HOPE waiver Complete 2 sport seasons (JV or Varsity) & fill out the HOPE waiver form to be eligible to waive the HOPE graduation requirement. You can only take 1 credit of PE per year. HOPE IS considered a PE course.

Online course completed? You are required to take one COURSE online to meet graduation requirements. Confused on how to do that or what course is best? • Pick up the FLVS/PVS handout with registration instructions and/or see your counselor.

Foreign Language College are demanding more & more foreign language so we recommend that you make yourself more competitive and take extra years of the same foreign language.

Popular ELECTIVES… Workplace Essentials (TA) take second Can semester of Junior year & both semesters of Senior year = 3 semesters. Minimum 2. 75 GPA + good discipline history AND you must have earned an industry certification or passed an AP Exam or Dual Enrollment course.

Interested in Graduating Early? Some students choose to graduate at the end of their Junior year. If this is something you are interested in, please discuss it with your parent(s), then see your Guidance Counselor to develop a plan to accomplish this.

Dual Enrollment / PTC q Dual enrollment in post-secondary courses allows students to earn credits toward a high school diploma and a career technical certificate tuition free! q Students will need three release periods in the beginning of school day dedicated to PTEC Dual Enrollment (Release periods 1 -3). q Free Pinellas County School bus transportation. q Requirements: q 2. 0 unweighted GPA q Complete PTC Dual Enrollment Application (handout) & then complete shadow day at PTC location

Dual Enrollment/ SPC • Qualifications • • • 3. 0 unweighted GPA Passing PERT scores (all 3 parts ~ Reading, Writing and Math) Qualified students can take up to 3 Dual Enrollment classes (on- or off-campus or combo of each. It also depends what course you want to take). • Comp I & II & The College Experience/College Success are currently available on DHS campus. • ADDITIONAL paperwork to complete if off-campus!!

Dual Enrollment/ SPC You MUST meet enrollment requirements (GPA, test scores & have an SPC ID#) for Dual Enrollment BEFORE we can put you in the course. Bring your SPC ID# to your Guidance Counselor if you are interested in taking off campus dual enrollment. SPC will give a FREE PERT test at DHS on Jan. 30, 2018. Sign up TODAY!

SLS 1101 The College Experience (3 college credits) – ON CAMPUS! The course is designed to strengthen skills essential to success in college, including study and test-taking strategies; time management techniques; creative and critical thinking skills; research strategies and information skills for online, blended and traditional learning environments. Requirements? 2. 5 unweighted GPA and have taken all 3 parts (reading, writing and math) of the PERT test. AND have a SPC ID # (handout)

SLS 1101 / College Success There are MANY benefits to taking this class including… FREE college credit, FREE course books AND if you are taking this class you will be considered a SPC dual enrollment student and will NOT have to pay the $40 application fee should you decide to attend SPC after high school.

Final Recommendations o Take a picture of your completed course request form. o Talk to your parents & teachers about your choices. o If you requested Honors or AP courses for next year, don’t forget you may have a summer assignment. (check website in June)

Can I change my mind? Of course! You will likely receive a proof sheet in the spring and will have an opportunity to change your mind at that point. OR You can make changes on your paper copy with Mrs. Dunworth, the Guidance Clerk until March 1 st, 2018. OR You can see your Guidance Counselor after March 1 st, 2018 but before school ends to request changes.
