‘STICKY’ DATA n Most solutions are focussed on adding data at the point of ‘STICKY’ DATA n Most solutions are focussed on adding data at the point of emission. This is fine for data which is unrelated to the video/audio n ‘Sticky’ data is content that needs to ‘stick’ with the V/A as it travels through multiple plants on its way from the creator to broadcast n Needs to be transparently stored and retrieved without the complications of locating it on a server somewhere. Delays of seconds, hours, days are commonplace - and what about years down the road? © norpak corporation 2001 14 MAR 01

FORWARD / BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY n n n Whether the signal is analog, serial digital FORWARD / BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY n n n Whether the signal is analog, serial digital or HDTV the ‘sticky’ data interface should be identical Applications such as captioningshould interface to the data encoder in the same way regardless of the TV standard used Makes the move from analog to digital or HDTV simple and straightforward. © norpak corporation 2001 14 MAR 01

LANGUAGES - PART 1 At the Caption Server to Caption Encoder interface: n n LANGUAGES - PART 1 At the Caption Server to Caption Encoder interface: n n n The interface for VBI closed captioning is the de facto standard “Control-A” command protocol Contains enough information to allow an NTSC caption encoder to insert EIA-608 captions and other services in the VBI Also contains enough information to allow a DTV caption encoder to insert “ 608 compatibility” and “derived 708” captions into a DTV stream Does not provide for full-blown EIA-708 DTV captions Does not provide for Caption Descriptors A new standard was needed. . . © norpak corporation 2001 14 MAR 01

LANGUAGES - PART 2 The Caption Distribution Packet (CDP) n n EIA-708 -B defines LANGUAGES - PART 2 The Caption Distribution Packet (CDP) n n EIA-708 -B defines the CDP Contains (optionally present) fields for: &EIA-608 caption data (“ 608 compatibility bytes”) &DTV caption data &Caption Descriptor &Time Code Intended to be used throughout the professional portion of the DTV distribution infrastructure Can be carried through various types of link: e. g. RS 232 server-toencoder, or embedded in VANC. . . © norpak corporation 2001 14 MAR 01

LANGUAGES - PART 3 Vertical Ancillary (VANC) data n n n SMPTE 291 M LANGUAGES - PART 3 Vertical Ancillary (VANC) data n n n SMPTE 291 M specifies a method for embedding data in a serial digital video signal VANC is analogous to VBI in analog video VANC is usable in SDI (SMPTE 259 M) and HD-SDI (SMPTE 292 M) VANC data is “sticky”; it accompanies, and remains synchronized with, the baseband video and audio signals as they are routed, recorded and switched. SMPTE 334 M specifies how to code the VANC data, assigns addresses to specific services, and specifies that captioning data is carried as CDPs. © norpak corporation 2001 14 MAR 01

LANGUAGES - PART 4 At the MPEG Encoder input: n n n Many ATSC LANGUAGES - PART 4 At the MPEG Encoder input: n n n Many ATSC program encoders have an RS 232 port for caption data input. First protocol was the “Grand Alliance” (GA), which uses a “push” model: data is fed to the encoder which embeds it as soon as possible. SMPTE 333 M is a “pull” protocol: the encoder requests a caption when it needs one. Encoder manufacturers have implemented one or both of these. Apparently, none has yet implemented EIA-708 -B CDPs, either in RS 232 or 334 M VANC. . . © norpak corporation 2001 14 MAR 01
