It is located southeast of Ukraine's capital Kiev on the Dnieper River, in the south-central part of the country. Dnipropetrovsk is the administrative centre of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The city that is now called Dnipropetrovsk was founded as part of the expansion of the Russian Empire into the lands North of the Black Sea, known as the Novorossiysk gubernia. The city was originally known as Yekaterinoslav, which translates in English to "The glory of Yekaterina" (Catherine the Great). It became the administrative centre of the Yekaterinoslav Governorate.

Dnipropetrovsk is rich in museums, such as The Museum of Arts, Zoological museum, Rocket museum, Museum of History, Holocaust Memorial Museum. A short distance away from the Transfiguration Cathedral there is the Historical Museum, which occupies a one-storey house built in 1905. The museum bears the name of D. I. Yavornitsky, the outstanding archaeologist, who was its director for 30 years. The Dnipropetrovsk Historical Museum is once of the Ukraine`s oldest and most popular. The museum was founded in 1849, it has on display rare collection of utensils concerned the Dnipropetrovsk area(over 177, 00 exhibits). One of the museum`s exposition is dedicated to arts and crafts of the Dnipropetrovsk Region.
