Topic 1 The United Kingdom is very small compared with many other countries in the world. London is the world’s seventh biggest city. Britain is an unusually beautiful country. There are five regions of England: Southeast, Southwest, East Anglia, Midlands and North of England. In the Southeast a lot of industries near the Thames. London is the capital of UK and it had historic cities: Windsor, Dover and Brighton. Heathrow Airport is a largest airport in the world and it about 33 km. The County of Kent situated here is known as the Garden of England. The Southwest is the region where the main activity is farming. The Southwest used to be known for its pirates. There are two principal cities: Bristol and Bath. The most westerly point of Great Britain “Land’s End” is also in the Southwest. East Anglia is very flat and farming region. It has beautiful cities with fine historic as Cambridge. The part of East Anglia called Fens. Oliver Cromwell was born in the Fens area. The East Anglia it’s more than half surrounded by seas. The Midlands, know as the heart of England, is the largest industrial part in the country. The two famous Midlands cities: Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford are connected with English culture: Stratford is the birthplace of great William Shakespeare and Oxford is famous for its university. The North of England is the widest and loneliest part of the country. The part of country is rich in coal. The main attractions of the North of England are the Lake District, the cities of York and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Many tourists come to see ruins of Hadrian’s Wall.
Topic 2 England is the largest and the richest part of GB. Its’ capital is London. The biggest industrial cities are London, Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, and other interesting cities as York, Chester, Oxford, and Cambridge. Stonehenge is one of the most popular prehistoric places in England. It is situate in the south-west of England. It is a circle of enormous stones (4 meters high) 80 meters across. Why it was built—is a mystery. However, there are suggestions. One explorers say that it used to be an ancient observatory (there some astronomic sence in the position of stones), others—a temple and so on. Salisbury Cathedral is an example of splendid English gothic architecture. The oldest of England one of four copies of Magna Charta are situated there. Chester is a very important city in the north-west. The word “chester” appeared from a Latin word “chesta”, which meant “forted camp”. It used to be a roman fortress. Now there is museum of both modern and ancient toys. There about 5. 000 exhibits there. Oxford is the home of oldest English university. Christ Church is the most famous college of university. It has a great hall, which has been built during the reign of King Henry the VIII and its’ chapel became the cathedral of Oxford. Cambridge is the home of the second oldest university of England. York was the capital of Northern England. And it is one of the best preserved Medieval cities not only in England, but also in whole Europe. It was built by romans. Ruled by Vikings and conquered by Anglo. Saxon. Birmingham is the city of 1. 500 trades, because of great variety of industries.
Topic 3 England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It comprises the central and southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain, including over 100 smaller islands. The country borders on Scotland Wales. It is washed by the Irish Sea, the Celtic Sea and the North Sea. The English Channel separates England from continental Europe. The population of the country is about 51 million people. Originally settled by Celtic peoples, England was conquered by Romans, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Danes, and Normans. Acts of union joined England with Wales in 1536, with Scotland in 1707 and with Ireland in 1801 to form the United Kingdom. The capital and the largest city of both England the United Kingdom is London. England has a temperate maritime climate. The weather in the country is very changeable and it rains a lot, especially in the Lake District. The most important rivers in England are Thames, Mersey and Tyne with the ports respectively in London, Liverpool and Newcastle. England’s economy is one of the largest in the world. The country is a leader in chemical and pharmaceutical industries as well as in aerospace and the arms industries. Tourism has also become an important part of England’s economy. The country is visited by millions of people every year. There are lots of theatres, museums, libraries and galleries in England. Among the most notable are London’s British Museum, housing a collection of more than 7 million objects, The British Library and the National Gallery. There a great number of universities in England. The most famous are Cambridge and Oxford attracting students from all over the world. They have many common features and known as Oxbridge. One more interesting fact to mention is that England is home to lots of different sports but the most played one is football. England is a very interesting nice country.
