Direct Object Pronouns (DOPs)
Direct Objects • Diagram each part of these English sentences: I want that skirt. I bought some shoes. • What is the subject, the verb, the direct object?
Direct Object Pronouns • Direct object pronouns take the place of the direct object in a sentence. For example:
Direct Object Pronouns • Instead of saying, “I want that skirt, ” you can say, “I want it” • The word “it” takes the place of the word “skirt. ”
Direct Object Pronouns (English) me us you him, her, it them
Direct Object Pronouns (Spanish) me (me) nos te X (you) lo (him or it) la(her or it) (us) los (them, you all) las (them, you all)
Placement of Direct Object Pronouns • Direct Object Pronouns, me, te, lo, la, nos, los and las are placed either before a conjugated verb or attached to the end of an infinitive.
Before the Conjugated Verb: • ¿Cuándo compras la pizza? • (¿Cuándo la compras? ) • Compro la pizza hoy. • (La compro hoy. )
Before the Conjugated Verb: • ¿Isabel, tienes el equipaje? • (¿Isabel, lo tienes? ) • No, no tengo el equipaje. • (No, no lo tengo).
Before the conjugated verb or after the infinitive: Before the conjugated verb (1 st verb): • ¿Quieres comprar el sombrero? • Sí, lo quiero comprar. After the infinitive (2 nd verb): • ¿Quieres comprar el sombrero? • Si, quiero comprarlo.
Direct Object Pronouns • When the pronoun replaces both a masculine and a feminine direct object noun, we use los. For example:
Direct Object Pronouns • ¿Cuándo compraste el boleto de ida y vuelta y las maletas? • Los compré el sábado pasado. • When did you buy the roundtrip ticket and the suitcases? • I bought them last Saturday.
Direct Object Pronouns • Julia, ¿me escuchas? (Julia do you hear me) • Sí, yo te escucho. (yes, I hear you) • La Sra. Eichler nos enseña español. DON’T FORGET THAT THE VERB CONJUGATES DEPENDING ON THE SUBJECT NOT THE DOP.
