digital cultural collections & education: what are we aiming at? Dr. Xenofon Tsilibaris Greek Research & Technology Network (GRNET) xtsili@grnet. gr
our starting point
“e-Learning”
an old concept still alive “a learning object is any entity, digital or non-digital, that may be used for learning, education or training" ΙΕΕΕ Learning Technology Standards Committee (2002)
this is NOT a learning object
…but it becomes in a context
libraries, archives & museums could (should? ) open up their collections to support online & blended education
1. go to the users • …don’t try to bring them where you are
they are here
…NOT here
2. find their practices • …and mimic it in the tools to make it easier for them to connect
teachers think pathways
…lets help them create/find
3. digital content everywhere • …we just need the right tools to capture it without disturbing our scientists & educators
they should be doing this
OR this
NOT this ID Author Subject Title Publisher Date Catalog
4. hide the complexity • …technology should not be an obstacle, even to the cultural institutions
why museums need a server
…in the age of i. Cloud?
We need to support our educators We need to listen to our learners
Technology is only the medium (and we need to make it invisible and straightforward)
