DIDSBURY INTEGRATED NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM covering Chorlton, Chorlton Park, East Didsbury, West Didsbury, Whalley Range WINTER 2015 TAKE POSITIVE STEPS TO MAKE YOUR HOME SAFE ARE THE DOORS AND WINDOWS LOCKED? This doesn’t just mean the front door, but any internal doors and upstairs windows too. It might sound obvious, but so many burglaries could have been avoided by just turning a key. HOW OBVIOUS IS IT THAT YOU ARE OUT? Leave a light or TV on and draw the curtains when you go out to give the impression that someone’s in. Consider using a timer switch and low-energy light bulbs to time lights to come on when it gets dark. LAPTOP SAT ON TABLE? IPOD ON THE WINDOWSILL? CAR KEYS IN FULL VIEW? Such items are easy pickings for a burglar. Keep valuable items out of sight and put them in a drawer, cupboard, or hide them under the bed. Also, mark you property with your postcode and house number, as this makes it harder for a burglar to sell stolen goods and can help the police return items to you. Merry Christmas from all the Neighbourhood Team at West Didsbury YOUR LOCAL INSPECTOR SDFH Did bury Neighbourhood Policing Team covers Whalley Range, Chorlton Park, Didsbury West and Didsbury East. Inspector Kinrade This is a fantastic and diverse place to live and I’m proud to have the opportunity to work here. Please join us in welcoming PS Chowdhury and PCSO Drennan to the West Didsbury Neighbourhood Team PS Chowdhury PCSO Drennan ADVICE ON HOW TO BEAT BOGUS CALLERS Most people who call at your home will be genuine. But sometimes, people turn up unannounced, with the intention of tricking their way into your home. They are known as “distraction burglars” or “bogus callers”, whose only aim is to get into homes to distract people and steal their money or valuables. Bogus callers may be smartly dressed and claim to be from the council, the police, NHS or gas, water or electricity companies. They can be convincing and persuasive. They may be men, women or even children. They may ask for a drink of water or to wash their hands. Some may be looking for a lost pet. By following the simple LOCK, STOP, CHAIN, CHECK message, we can all be sure that the people who enter our homes are who they claim to be. LOCK: Ensure you keep exterior doors locked. STOP: Before you answer the door, stop and think whether you are expecting anyone. CHAIN: Put the door bar or chain on. Look through the spyhole or the window to see who it is. Always keep the bar or chain on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep. CHECK: Ask for and carefully check their ID card, even if they have a prearranged appointment (all genuine callers will carry one). If you are not expecting them and they do not carry an ID card DO NOT LET THEM IN. If you have any doubts at all as to whether the caller is genuine, ask them to leave and come back at a time that is convenient to you and when you have had a chance to ask someone to be with you. REMEMBER IF IN DOUBT: KEEP THEM OUT! How to keep safe when out and about v Keep your money, mobile phone and keys in a safe place like your bag or pocket, so they do not get lost or stolen. v Take only the money you will need. v Don’t advertise expensive jewellery to thieves, keep them out of sight. v Keep with friends safety in numbers. there’s v If you have one, take a personal attack alarm with you. Keep it where you can find it easily. Make sure you know how to use it. v If you can, tell someone where you are going and when you will be back. v If you can, keep away from quiet, dark places. Don’t forget v Carry your bag across the front of your body, clocks go forward not just over your shoulder, and it closed. 1 hour, Sunday, 30 th March 2014, 01: 00

Local residents have raised concerns with regards to vehicles being driven at speed in Whalley Range and Chorlton area. This is concerning due to the fact reckless and inconsiderate driving may lead to serious collisions resulting in either persons sustaining serious injury or even loss of life. Officers from the Didsbury Neighbourhood Police Team are working with partner agencies and Home Watch Scheme members to tackle this issue and identify those responsible so that appropriate actions can be taken against them. To tackle this issue we also need the help of our community members. If you see any vehicles being driven at speed in your area, then please make a note of the registration numbers and date/time/location vehicles being driven at speed. If possible please obtain descriptions of the drivers, but DO NOT MAKE ANY ATTEMPTS TO STOP THE VEHICLES OR PUT YOURSELF IN DANGER IN ANY WAY.
