A. Use of Speaking verbs Use of different verbs shows the speakers’ mood E. g. “Quickly, turn on the torch, ” Jeremy begged. (Showing the speaker’s fear) E. g. “I can’t believe there is a spaceship!” Maggie exclaimed. (Showing the speaker’s disbelief and surprise. ) E. g. “Don’t come closer or I will kill you!” Jeremy shouted/screamed. (Showing the speaker’s anger) E. g. “Let’s keep our voice down. Don’t let the alien find us, ” Maggie whispered. (Showing the speaker’s carefulness)

More Speaking Verbs E. g. “What do you mean? Could you tell more? ” Jeremy asked. (Showing the speaker’s doubt) E. g. Maggie sighed. “Don’t be silly!” (Showing the speaker’s helplessness) E. g. “If I had a million dollars, I would fix this old house, ” Maggie laughed. (Showing the speaker’s happiness) E. g. “Grandma’s dead now, ” Jeremy said as he shivered. (Showing the speaker’s fear) E. g. “I think you’re afraid, ” Maggie said (Showing the speaker’s happiness) with a smile.

B. Tips on writing dialogues Use contractions 1) You don’t look too bad yourself. ’ said Amy. 2) I've been waiting here for an hour. You didn't leave a note’ My mother complained.

Use of short phrases 1) ‘The hospital? ’ She asked in surprise. 2) ‘For three hours. ’ He replied.

Use of gap fillers ‘Um’ , ‘Er’ or ‘Oh’ 1) I left the house in a hurry. I. . . um. . . my mother. . . " John said. 2) ‘Oh. Oh, God. Mom's all right, isn't she? ’ Justin said.
