Attributes of Detroit Allied Health Middle College High School n n n Students will have a wide range of experiences Students will attend a high school on a college campus 9 th and 10 th grade students begin in a high school environment with strong focus on literacy Transition classes are offered during the 9 th and 10 th grades In the next phase, students will attend actual college classes where only one third of class will be high school students ARG

Attributes of Detroit Allied Health Middle College High School n Daily seminars are provided when students are in college classes n n n Tutorial aspect Discussion of text to build self-confidence Study groups Students attend high school classes in the morning and college classes in the afternoon The goal is that EVERY youngster gets 30 college credits by end of 12 th grade The goal is that students earn an Associate Degree by the end of the 13 th year ARG

Importance of location on college campus … n n n Being on a college campus affects the high school students’ view of themselves. The college environment positively impacts the attitudes and behaviors of the high school students. The power of a middle college is that the high school age students gradually interface with adult students. ARG

Students (parents) enter the DAHMCHS with a clear understanding of the commitment needed for success Summer is a requirement of the DAHMCHS experience. n Sometimes the day may be elongated. n A 13 th year is required. n ARG

Why attend Detroit Allied Health Middle College High School and not a “regular neighborhood high school”? n n n Yields an Associate Degree and/or transferable college credits with no cost to the student or his/her family Provides students college credits from WCCCD that are transferable to other colleges and universities Includes student visits, internships, and work experience through its partner, the DMC ARG

About parent commitment … Attend informational meetings and parent-teacher conferences n Become actively involved in student’s educational experiences n Encourage students to complete requirements for both the diploma and the degree n ARG

DAHMCHS … n n n Prepares 9 th and 10 th grade students for challenging college courses and program entrance exams Develops critical thinking skills Offers a supportive system to integrate college courses ARG

CONCERN … n n Students under the age of 18 cannot attend clinical courses, as mandated by the state. Therefore, 11 th and 12 th grade students can take liberal arts and other degree requirements, until they turn 18 years old. ARG
