LE: NOTRE III Work Package 1: Strengthening Education in Landscape Architecture The focus of this work package will be on developing a structured and sustainable approach to improving the innovative character*, accessibility** and above all the quality*** of landscape architecture education in Europe and beyond. *Output 1. 1 Staff development body **Output 1. 2 Conversion masters ***Output 1. 3 Accreditation le: notre project - long term evolution
LE: NOTRE III Work Package 2: Strengthening Research in Landscape Architecture Work package 2 will involve the development of three separate outputs, all of which are to be carried out under the auspices of the ‘research division’ of the new LE: NOTRE Institute. The transdisciplinary character of landscape architecture means that these activities will encourage the involvement of representatives of neighbouring disciplines. . le: notre project - long term evolution
LE: NOTRE III Work Package 3: Strengthening Innovative Practice in Landscape Architecture The key task of work package 3 is the creation of a new interface between higher education, research and professional practice in the field of landscape architecture. This will establish a new basis for exploiting the benefits of the project with the aim of strengthening innovation by supporting cooperation and mutual exchange of knowledge, information and experience. . le: notre project - long term evolution
LE: NOTRE III Work Package 4: Establishing a sustainable institutional framework The fourth work package will involve developing and expanding the organisation and the work programme for the new ‘LE: NOTRE Institute’ which will take over the activities of the Thematic Network at the end of this project and provide the long term basis for collaboration between education, research and innovative practice both within Europe but also in a wider context. . le: notre project - long term evolution

Conversion Master Programmes are different. . . “Increasing access to higher education. . . ” ‘Conversion’ master programmes provide an important alternative route to a professional qualification in landscape architecture in comparison with the more conventional route of a combined two cycle degree programme (e. g. bachelor and master) in the same discipline. The fundamental nature of a conversion masters programme is that it provides suitably talented students, who have already graduated in a neighbouring discipline, with the opportunity to gain a professionally recognised qualification in a significantly shorter time than the four or five years that would otherwise be the case if studying from the start of an undergraduate programme. le: notre project - long term evolution
Conversion Master Programmes are more than just ‘catch up’ courses, and are equivalent to a two cycle qualification It is important to understand a ‘conversion’ masters as being specially designed type of landscape architecture programme, which is more than just a series of ‘catch-up’ courses for students from other undergraduate backgrounds, which they take before entering a ‘normal’ landscape architecture masters degree to study alongside students who already have a bachelor degree in landscape architecture. Despite this, it is also important to make clear that a bachelor in a neighbouring discipline combined with a ‘conversion’ masters does not result in an inferior professional qualification in comparison to that gained following a full four or five year combined undergraduate and graduate programme (e. g. 3 plus 2 years) in landscape architecture. The two types of graduates will have different profiles, but will be equally suited to professional careers in landscape architecture. le: notre project - long term evolution
Neighbouring discipline + Conversion masters = ‘inverted’ consecutive degree programme Coming from a neighbouring discipline – such as architecture, urban and regional planning, geography or ecology – graduate entrants to a conversion master programme will already have acquired a range of competences which are relevant for a landscape programme. However, although each of these will have their own specific contribution to make to the landscape architecture studies, they alone cannot compensate for the three years of a typical specialist landscape bachelor programme. A conversion masters thus needs to add something extra, and cannot simply be equated with a ‘conventional’ two year (120 ECTS) masters programme, which is designed specifically to build on a bachelor qualification in the same discipline. Instead it is closer in content to a Bachelor Programme. le: notre project - long term evolution
Some ECTS Arithmetic If. . . a Conversion Master Programme = 180 ECTS of course units + 40 ECTS of ‘exemptions’ on the basis of competences acquired from the first degree (22. 22% ) = 220 ECTS teaching programme in total Of this: 50% Projects, Studios etc. + 50% Lectures, Seminars, Workshops etc. Therefore: 90 ECTS Lectures and Seminars etc. divided between 12 landscape architecture sub-disciplines = 7. 5 ECTS per subdiscipline on average (but in practice likely to vary between 5 – 10 ECTS per sub-discipline) + 40 ECTS Neighbouring disciplines inputs (see review papers) le: notre project - long term evolution
Example Course Unit Types and Sizes 1 Lecture ‘Small’ (e. g. 1 ‘hour’ per week contact time) • 14 contact hours per semester • 26 hours self-study time, including assessment and preparation) • 40 hours total student workload = 2 ECTS Units Lecture ‘Medium’ (e. g. 2 ‘hours’ per week contact time) • 28 contact hours per semester • 52 hours self-study time, including assessment and preparation) • 80 hours total student workload = 4 ECTS Units le: notre project - long term evolution
Example Course Unit Types and Sizes 2 Seminar (e. g. 2 ‘hours’ per week contact time) • 28 contact hours per semester • 32 hours self-study time, including assessment and preparation) • 60 hours total student workload = 3 ECTS Units Workshop (e. g. 3 ‘hours’ per week contact time) • 42 contact hours per semester • 18 hours self-study time, including assessment and preparation) • 60 hours total student workload = 3 ECTS Units le: notre project - long term evolution
