DESIGNER BABIES
What is “designer babies”? Designer baby is a term that refers to the product of a genetically engineered baby. These babies are "designed" (fixed/changed) while still in the womb to achieve more desired looks, skills, or talents.
ORIGIN The first designer baby was created in the U. S. in 2000. Doctors used screening techniques to test the embryos of Lisa and Jack Nash. They chose the embryos that would be an exact cell match to their daughter Molly suffers from a genetic disorder called Fanconi Anemia which causes bone marrow deficiency. The embryo selected did not carry the disease and was a perfect tissue match. As a result, Adam Nash was born in August after Mrs. Nash underwent four IVF cycles. Stem cells were collected from his umbilical cord to be donated and used to replace Molly's bone marrow. the creation of Adam, many more couples have created their own designer baby to save their sick child or prevent their offspring from inheriting a certain genetic disease.
NOWADAYS Britain has become the first country in the world to allow the creation of babies with DNA from three people, after MPs voted for the controversial procedure.
PROS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Prevents genetic diseases such as Down Syndrome, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s Disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and many others. Reduces risk of inherited medical conditions such as obesity, anemia, diabetes, cancer, and many more. Keeps up with modern technologies. Increases human life span up to 30 years. Parents set their own limits for genetically engineering their baby.
CONS 1. 2. 3. 4. Geneticists are not perfect people and cannot 100% properly evaluate every gene. It is more than likely mistakes will be made. Could create a gap in society. “Designer” babies would most likely be better looking, smarter, etc. This could create “classes” between designer and non designer babies. Because the technology is so new, it is unknown whether genetically modifying the babies will effect the gene pool. This could cause difficulties later on throughout the baby’s family tree. The process of genetically engineering a child is expensive.
My opinion I think, designer babies will be available in distant future. In the time, where it will happen correctly, without any mistakes. But the history of humanity will be completely changed. Maybe “designed people” shall be called as a different class or level of humans. I assure that after designing people there will be creating people as biological weapon. But it’s too far for us. Can people take such responsibility? Will they act like a God? Only time can show this but probably we’ll never know this.
