Why study Community Development in India? § India is huge, bustling and diverse § Population of ~1. 2 b – one sixth of the world § 2, 000+ ethnic groups , 2 official languages, but 21 other recognised regional languages § Every major religion represented, Ingrained caste system § Economy today • 12 th largest economy (by nominal value) 2 nd fastest growing major economy • By 2020, India will be among the leading § economies Reality today • Largest concentration of poor people in the world • ~46% children under 3 have suffered malnutrition 6
