Deadly Disease of Backsliding Hebrews 3: 12 -19
Insidious Disease • Slow development – Weight gain – Hair loss – Backsliding (Jeremiah 8: 5; Hosea 11: 7) – Forewarned (1 Timothy 4: 1 -5)
Causes • For Israel it was idolatry – Idolatry (Exodus 20: 3 -5) – Now we have worldliness, recreation – Occupy all of one’s time
Causes • Competition with God – Rich man (Luke 12: 15) – Warning (1 John 2: 15 -17) – Covetousness (Colossians 3: 5) – Backslide when we are distracted
Symptoms • Often subtle – Easier to see faults of others – Self-examination (2 Corinthians 13: 5)
Symptoms • Missing services? (Hebrews 10: 25) • Don’t “get anything out of” the services? (John 4: 24) • Find yourself criticizing the song leader, preacher, class teacher, one leading the prayer, or one making the announcements? (Philippians 2: 14)
Symptoms • Wonder if the sermon will help someone, or be over soon? (Matthew 6: 33) • Becoming harder and harder to find time to study the Bible? (2 Timothy 2: 15) • Do you sing with joy or not at all? (James 5: 13)
Symptoms • Rarely attend Gospel meetings? (Acts 10: 33) • Find yourself holding grudges against fellow Christians? (Colossians 3: 13) • Seldom feel like praying? (1 Thessalonians 5: 17)
Symptoms • Allowed giving to become an afterthought? (2 Corinthians 8: 2; 9: 6, 7) • Concerned about the growth of the church? (Luke 14: 23) • Any real change in your spiritual life? (2 Peter 3: 18)
Victims • Anyone of us – Have any symptoms? – Don’t ignore the warning signs – Other symptoms
Victims • Warnings – Cannot turn back (Luke 9: 62; Hebrews 3: 12; 10: 38) – Beware of Satan’s tricks (2 Corinthians 2: 11) – Rest awaits us (Hebrews 3: 18, 19; 4: 9 -11)
